We have been inundated with stories about the statewide smoking ban that went into effect last week. Reports indicated that patrons cheered at some establishments when the ban became effective on May 1st. The Arizona Republic noted, The air in the Valley just got a little bit clearer, at least inside.
But the law was never really about breathing healthy air. It was about a majority imposing its will on an unpopular minority. And its not the smokers Im talking about.
Bar and restaurant owners invest time, money and energy determining how they will operate their business. I wonder if those cheering would be willing to prohibit other things in drinking and eating establishments that bother them or may impact ones health. What about loud music? Dim lighting? Of course, banning certain foods is just around the corner.
When a majority decides that it can infringe on the property rights and business decisions of another person, we set a dangerous precedent. Its the kind of thinking that leads to private property being taken for another persons private use, as was allowed in the Kelo v. City of New London U.S. Supreme Court case. And thats nothing to cheer about.
Good article. It is not appropriate for the gubmint to tell anyone what they can do with their private property.
You’ll be able to live to 130.....you won’t have any freedoms mind you. But you will live to 130.
And that’s all that is important, isn’t it? /sarc
An obvious reference to the ROP.
Youll be able to live to 130.....you wont have any freedoms mind you. But you will live to 130.
And thats all that is important, isnt it?
Let me clarify this - You’ll be able to pay taxes until you are 130. That’s what’s important!
One of these days, these idiots will figure out that “living” is dangerous to your health and they’ll outlaw it.
Ping
In some aspects......they already have.
No Smoking laws are applauded by a huge majority of people. Some are conservatives that have little common sense or regard for the Constitution. Most people believe that “majority rules” is the way our guvmit was formed. A sad testiment to our guvmit schools.
Actually you won’t. The Govt will decide that once you hit age.........120, no make it 110, ummm, better lower it to 100, that your quality of life is not high enough to force you to go on living. They will do the humanitarian thing and “Put you to sleep”. The real reason will be that the cost of socialized medicine is to high.
I think it's a more pointed reference to transfats. Muslims aren't concerned about banning certain foods; they'll merely lop off your head if you eat or serve them the wrong ones.
It is not their private property. It is rented from the government (property taxes) therefore they can tell them what to do with it.
Doesn’t make it right, it is just the way it is.
You’re probably right. But I can’t help thinking about the checkers who would not scan the pork products in their store.
Not yet...IMO.
A reference to trans fat which has been proven to clog arteries and shorten life.
Bacon, ham and other pork will be the future...if the Islamic jihad is victorious.
Private property is a natural right that all humans have.
Communism does away with private property as soon as it comes into power.
In the USA, both parties subscribe to the tenets of communism, although in different degrees.
The American public would never allow the government to take away private property. The politicians know this, so they gradually render the concept of private property meaningless. They invented the property tax, which confiscates a percentage of your house and land each year. They invented the laws which severely restrict what we can do on our property. Given enough time, the politicians will have accomplished what they set out to: they will have taken control of all private property but they will have left us with the taxes!
Some folks still don't get that the property that one has put their life's blood into should not be controlled by other people that may (and I emphasize MAY), or may not, frequent that property.
...Some news for nonsmokers. Everyday nonsmokers pass away... Just like those that smoke cigarettes...
“Some are conservatives that have little common sense or regard for the Constitution.”
In that case they are not “Conservatives.” Republicans maybe, conservatives definitely not.
