The Middle East is becoming a factory for terrorists and America needs to wake up to the threat of radical Islam, author Nonie Darwish told a packed house in John Held Auditorium Saturday night.
Several police officers were present during the two hour presentation sponsored by local media, businesses and individuals.
"Radical Islam is not a religion," Darwish, author of "Now They Call Me Infidel," said.
"It's an infection within the Muslim culture. Radical Islam advocates hatred, violence and terrorism. Radical Islam is more threatening than Nazi Germany because we're not fighting just one country, but an ideology that exists in many countries.
"There are 55 Muslim countries ... with very few moderate Muslim leaders. They are quiet because they are outnumbered."
Darwish said radical Islam has become more dangerous than China because of the American open door policy.
"They know they can conquer us from within," she said. "The Saudi government is financing mosques being built every day in America ...with the messages, 'don't assimilate in America,' and 'Islam isn't equal to, but dominant to other religions.'"
She said she has witnessed the same Islamic clerics who tell Americans Islam is a religion of peace, turn around and propagate jihad (the command of holy war against non-Muslims) to young Arabs.
"Lying is allowed in Islam if it is used to spread Islam," she said. "These radical Islamic leaders are extremely powerful. They teach young Arabs it's their holy mission to Islamize the world."
She said the way young Arabs are taught jihad by the clerics is against international law.
Born and raised in Egypt and Gaza, Darwish is the daughter of an Egyptian military leader who was killed by Israeli forces when she was 8-years-old.
After her father's assassination, Egyptian government officials came to offer condolences to the family and asked which one of her siblings would avenge her father's death by killing Jews.
"Peace was never an option," she explained. "I felt (I was being told) I should kill Jews if I really loved my father."
Her father, she said, was a military man, but never a man of hate. Darwish said her father's principles were consistent with those of Anwar Sadat, former Egyptian president and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize who was assassinated in 1981.
"He believed peace with Israel was possible," she said.
Darwish has lived in the United States almost 30 years. After 9-11, she said she could not keep quiet about the dangerous spread of radical Islam.
When she woke Sept. 11 to see the second plane crash into the World Trade Center, she realized "jihad had come to America. I was devastated.
"The country I loved had just been attacked by my country of origin." Her country she said is "in desperate need of reformation. The moral fabric and goodness I knew in Arab countries in gone."
Darwish said it's important to know America did not cause the attacks of 9-11.
"Nothing the U.S. has done has caused this terrorism," she said.
The radical Islamic clerics have had to become so dogmatic in their hate propagating because modern technology, particularly the internet, has enabled young Arabs to see freedoms available in the West, she said.
"Arab young people love the U.S. culture, they see the modernity and they want it," she said. "Even though they say they hate America, they love the hope in America.
"This is a big threat to traditional Islamist teachers. The more young Arabs see the West, the more traditional Islamists have to increase the hate-mongering. This is all done by design to make jihadists feel no remorse for killing."
She has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and at many universities including Harvard, Brown, UCLA and Boston. Darwish has met with several congressmen and senators.
June 20 she will have the opportunity to address Congress, "but for only five minutes," she said.
In that five minutes one project she will promote to Congress will be "Access to Access," a policy stating if Muslim governments are allowed to set up mosques in America, then Christians and Jews must be allowed to set up churches and synagogues in Muslim countries.
Most Arab countries do not allow immigration for non-Muslims.
Regarding her stance on the Iraq war, Darwish said there is no quick solution.
"Americans are in Iraq to give time to the reformers to take power, but this will not happen quickly," she said.
And, she added, with 22 countries neighboring Iraq that don't want democracy, America needs to be serious about helping the change.
"It's up to Muslim leaders to start reform," she said. "Jihad must be redefined within the Middle East. There must be a peaceful re-interpretation of jihad.
"Muslims must be challenged, they need to look at themselves in the mirror."
And Americans, she said, must wake up to the real danger of radical Islam spreading within the United States.
"The problem is so major Americans don't want to face it," she said. "We have been living with security for so long we are in a state of complacency. We don't believe there are any more Genghis Khans in the world."
And the American media, she said, needs to do more to expose the truth behind the radicals.
"The American media has failed us. They are too worried about being politically correct. They don't want to appear to be Islamaphobic."
Barbara Seeling, a retired teacher from Buena Vista, said the Darwish presentation was "absolutely fantastic. She's an extremely courageous lady. I wish we could clone her and send her around the United States.
"The younger people, 20- and 30-year-olds need to hear her."
She added, "I'm very disappointed she'll only have five minutes in Washington. I guess she'll have to talk fast. Bush needs to hear her, he needs the encouragement."

It already is a terror factory. It is also a huge bank for the funding of terror. If this country is stupid and careless enough to put a socialist in the White House in 2008, I cannot imagine what will happen to our security and attacks upon this country.
Most likely it will take another 9/11 or worse to wake the Washington country club up to do something about how we view and treat radical Islam.
Defund them by drilling at home!
More refineries, more oil wells, more nuclear reactors!
If the terrorist blow up a big old ship in San Fran, NYC, or LA...then the some of the DUmmies might wake up for a short time.

The main question is in front of us just like it is with our military. How do you tell the radical muslim from the moderate ones? It’s impossible. They are on their way to taking over Europe.....when are we next? Hopefull, with the recent French elections, they will take care of the problem there. From France, it may well be taken care of in the rest of Europe but it’s going to take some time.

Actually they will claim that the US blew up the ship to give the government a pretext to attack someone or pass new restrictive laws. They wil bring up the nazis burning of the Reichstag as proof. And others will believe them as small minds think alike.
Unfortunately, the way young Arabs are taught is in complete compliance with the Koran, which teaches that the Koran is the only true and valid international law.
It isn't the teaching methods that are wrong, it's the content.
The fact of the matter is there are no moderates. 15% of the moslems are radicals. Active, death defying infidel killers. What percent of the population of the US is in the US military? You have to remember , you are looking at the nation of Islam.
Their religion calls for the death of the infidel. If they follow their religion, you my friend will be dead.
Maybe I am missing something - have you noticed these moderates are not speaking out against the radicals actions??
