Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton on Sunday offered his strongest apology yet for the actions of an elite platoon of Metropolitan Division officers who swarmed a May Day immigration rally in MacArthur Park, and said that those officers are off the streets until he finds out what went wrong.
Saying he watched extensive videos of Tuesday's incident, which left several reporters and rally attendees injured by batons and rounds of foam bullets and sock-like projectiles, Bratton called the officers' conduct indefensible.
"I feel comfortable apologizing . Things were done that shouldn't have been done," Bratton told a group of journalists who gathered at the KTLA-TV Channel 5 studios in Hollywood. "I'm not seeking to excuse it . As one human being to another, there were things that shouldn't have been done."
Bratton said the 60 or so members of the Metropolitan Division's Platoon B have been "stood down" and won't return to active street duties until they have undergone retraining that meets his level of comfort.
"Some of them in all likelihood won't be returning to the Metropolitan Division as a result of our findings," he said.
Any disciplinary action won't come until the LAPD issues a May 30 report to the City Council. "Some of this will be career-impacting," Bratton added.
The chief made it clear that incident commanders would be just as accountable.

What’s he apologizing for?
Not arresting the MFs?
MAN Karl boy Chief Bratton dont’ stand behind his men
Is this same guy that got nail by Rudy once for some kind of hanky panky
He's so L.A. now!
Here in Los Angeles watching the news is sickening. When are those illegals going to apologize for throwing rocks??? The authorities should apologize for not arresting felons who broke into our country!
We are going to be hard pressed to find anyone who will serve in kaw enforcement in our country in short order.
Turns out LAPD shot three Less Than Lethal rounds per rock thrower... less than half the number reported by the press.
Giuliani never accused him of any unethical behavior, to my knowledge.
Most people believe he was pushed out as NYPD Commissioner because he thought he could make unilateral decisions regarding the Police Department without letting the Mayor know what he was doing or approving it.
From what I understand, Giuliani told him that the Mayor was ultimately the one held responsible for what the NYPD did or didn't accomplish and that he did not appreciate being kept in the dark until after major decisions were made.
Do keep us apprised of your recruiting efforts over the next few months, Chief. Let us know how it’s going.
Every day between 4pm and 6pm, there is at least one, two or three End of Watch broadcasts of 30 and 40 year veterans of the LAPD. The amount of experienced officers retiring is amazing....since there was a big hiring boom after the Vietnam war, etc.
The actions of the Metropolitan Division very well may have prevented a riot, they should get medals and Bratton is the one who should be suspended, permanently.
Once again I can’t feel any sympathy for those that continue to live in LA, or California in general.
Meanwhile, I’m guessing that the CHP, Glendale, Burbank, Santa Clarita, etc. are doing much better in their recruiting in the LA area.
Now Chief Bratton........Down on your knees and Kiss it.
And the constant stream of appeasement seems to never end.
LAPD Chief motto:
“To protect my own azz and to serve myself”
