I'm sticking with Ron Paul for now and might even flirt with Fred Thompson.

However, I like a lot of what I've seen in Romney. And I do believe in converts to the pro-life/pro-family cause (since I am one myself). Romney does sound especially sincere on pro-family. And his wife is very convincing on pro-life, maybe because, as it is with many couples, it is the wife who leads the husband on that issue. Their account of how they finally turned to a fully pro-life position is convincing. And we should remember that it has been our pro-life converts that have often been our best pro-life champions. Once you have faced and recoiled from the horror of the abortion mills, it has a profound effect.

Romney hasn't passed the conservative litmus test yet. But he has by no means failed it either.

I would like to see him move past his "Rodent Hunter" position on firearms. The Second is not about sporting goods. And a Harvard JD like Romney can hardly pretend ignorance. Lawrence Tribe, a liberal Democrat Harvard professor, knows it and writes about it. So I think Mitt Romney should know it too. It's time he starts to speak out a little bit more on the issue if he wants the support of our RKBA wing. Taking out a lifetime NRA membership is a first step. He needs to do more.

Romney remains an interesting candidate. His pro-business credentials are impeccable. His raw intelligence and scholarship are unmatched in the current field. He has that incurable Reagan-style optimism along with his pleasing appearance and grooming. And he has the potential to lead a Reagan-landslide for us. But only if he fully upholds our party platform with no exceptions.

In reality I think it has to be Mitt, and that's ok. This is the party that nominated Bob Dole. None of the thoroughbred conservatives will get nominated.
