Environmentalists Preach the Theology of Sartre

French Existentialist and Playwright Jean Paul Sartre used his villainous character Garcin, from his play No Exit, to voice his true opinion concerning most of his neighbors.

“pas besoin de gril: l'enfer, c'est les autres – You don't need red-hot pokers: Hell is—other people!”

Sartre, no doubt, meant that in a metaphorical sense. Paul Watson, Founder and President of The Sea Sheppard Conservation Society, offers a more fundamentalist interpretation of this secular attempt at defining the hereafter. Like Agent Smith from the Movie The Matrix, he finds our presence on Earth to be at least pathological, if not full-on damning.

Smith the Cyber-malefactor gave a soliloquy to Morpheus that included the following lines:

”I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you aren’t actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we... are the cure.”

Watson’s latest offering ,“The Beginning of the End for Life as We Know it on Planet Earth?”, at the Sea Sheppard website, rants in a similar vain.

”A virus kills its host and that is exactly what we are doing with our planet’s life support system. We are killing our host the planet Earth.”

”I was once severely criticized for describing human beings as being the “AIDS of the Earth.” I make no apologies for that statement. Our viral like behavior can be terminal both to the present biosphere and ourselves. We are both the pathogen and the vector.”

Don Gainor summarizes Watson’s proposed solutions to this problem as a call for the Earth’s population to decrease to less than 1 Billion people. There is only one button to push that would allow Watson to do that in one step, and that solution could leave a substantial carbon footprint.

So instead, Watson offers us a five step plan to “re-wild the planet.”

1)“No human community should be larger than 20,000 people and separated from other communities by wilderness areas.” New York, London, Paris, Moscow are all too big. Then again, so are Moose Jaw, Timbuktu and even Annapolis, Md.

2)“We need vast areas of the planet where humans do not live at all and where other species are free to evolve without human interference.”

3)“We need to radically and intelligently reduce human populations to fewer than one billion.”

4)“Sea transportation should be by sail. The big clippers were the finest ships ever built and sufficient to our needs. Air transportation should be by solar powered blimps when air transportation is necessary.”

5) At least Watson was generous and said people could still talk with one another across great distances. “Communication systems can link the communities,” he proclaimed from on high.

I also find it a bit harsh, but fair to point that this man is George Monbiot after three martinis and not enough finger food to help absorb the juice. I personally thought The Unabomber had a much more poignant turn of phrase. This screed will only serve to make Al Gore look rational by comparison. Which is why this is a very bad thing.

Another group, Optimum Population Trust, offers us a less radical method to get control of that raging human population. They project that the world’s population will reach 9 Billion by 2050, and like every other preacher of death and perdition via overpopulation, they rate the Earth’s carrying capacity, somewhere substantially lower. The fact that Malthus’ mathematics has the human race dead already does nothing to dissuade these people from a good, profitable activist shtick.

An Australian outfit, NEWS.COM, describes some of OPT’s population control rhetoric.

“John Guillebaud, co-chairman of OPT and emeritus professor of family planning at University College London, said: "The effect on the planet of having one child less is an order of magnitude greater than all these other things we might do, such as switching off lights.”

"The greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the planet would be to have one less child."

So much for Queen Victoria’s old admonition to “Close your eyes and think of England.” This man is actually asking for people to depopulate his own country. Muqtada Al Sadr would do it for him free of charge, and Guillebaud wouldn’t even need to remember the rubber.

When people tell other people that they shouldn’t breed, this isn’t friendly advice. It is advice based on irrational hatred and utmost contempt. Individuals like Monbiot, Watson, Guillebaud and Gore also never seem to mean that they should be doing that sort of thing themselves.

The Al Gores of the world always have as many kids as they want, as much house as they want and a fairly substantial number of annual flights by private jet. They just buy offsets when the conscience kicks in. This tendency to enjoin the other people to live by rules that Gore, Monbiot, et al would never abide is a further sign of disingenuous contempt.

This do as I say, not as I do injunction to reduce human population is based in hatred and contempt, rather than honest concern. It gives moral sanction to the basest thoughts of vile lunatics. At least Cho Seung Hui and Ostengropenfuhrer Heydritch never had the effrontery to suggest they were attempting to reduce mankind’s carbon footprint.

The use of environmental rhetoric to mask the delusional hatred of deracinated whack-jobs and mouth-breathing loons could lead to another of Sartre’s repeated metaphors. The concept of nausea.

Environmental crazies are bad. They make people like Al Gore look like "rational" environmentalists by comparison. There is nothing even remotely sane being preached by our "rational" environmental movement at present.

Funny. I hear of "overpopulation" among other mammals too. The herd needs thinning and hunting is permitted. Sometimes there is a bounty on some mammals when their numbers get too high.

Beavers will dam rivers and it isn't always eco-friendly.

The premise is false and the conclusion that man is a virus is downright psychotic derangement and self-loathing.

What would he suggest... forced euthanasia at a certain age?(Logan's Run)...forced sterilization after having one child? (Gattaca) Sounds like ideas from a science fiction movies.

Their whole plan is whack, is seemingly insane. They clearly haven't thought it through but they are pushing it on the gullible and what will be their innocent victims, propelled by their 'leader' algore and his Oscar win and his nutjob ideas. Just how long will it take to whittle down the population with just the one child, no elderly policy?

Let's suppose they go with these radical ideas. Okay, an entire population over a certain age is gone, and few new babies. We're still going to have billions left.

If they should ever succeed in getting to this point, what then? Surely they will be impatient to 'save' the 'dying' earth. And buoyed by any success at exterminating unnecessary people, they will push the envelope. The sick, the uneducated - or the educated, or those in open disagreement. And then, they will have morphed fully into the next Hitler or Stalin or Pol Pot or Mugabe.

And finally, in their little scheme, how is production of goods and services maintained with 5/6ths of the planet gone? We will be forced back to the stone ages, or like something out of The Matrix, an odd patois of high tech and stone age. Sigh. The envirowhackos are too clever by half, and this seems to be their big moment in the spotlight thanks to algore's little movie.

He has it within his power to immediately reduce the world population by one. It’s a start. Others are welcome to follow.
