Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday urged graduates of a small, historically black college to remain optimistic about their ability to fight injustice and change society for the better.
"That's what elections are for," she said. "Don't let anyone wear you down to the point where you believe it is not worth trying to change your society any longer." A crowd of about 4,000 listened to the Democratic presidential candidate deliver the commencement address for about 225 graduates of Wilberforce University, a school of about 1,050 students about 15 miles east of Dayton that traces its roots back to 1856.
Clinton, a New York Democrat, told the crowd that if they turn a blind eye to injustices levied against women, minorities and the weak or vulnerable "we let it linger in the atmosphere."
"Journeys that led to the abolition of slavery still call us to finish the march to justice," she said.
The crowd gave a warm reception to Clinton, and broke into applause several times during her 25 minute speech, which largely avoided the hot-button campaign issues like the war in Iraq.
Clinton chose the ceremony at Wilberforce for her first foray into bellwether Ohio in the year before the election. The site was the Nutter Center at Wright State University in suburban Dayton. The venue has a capacity for 12,000 people.
Clinton said there was still work to do as long as children die because families can't afford medical care, pay increases for CEOs outpace that of hardworking families and wounded soldiers come home to "facilities not fit for them to stay in."
"We need to be willing to say this is wrong," Clinton said. "Let us make it right."
Later Saturday, Clinton was set to appear with Cleveland leaders, including Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, at a high school. Clinton also is scheduled to return to Ohio in just a few days as the keynote speaker for the annual Ohio Democratic Party dinner in Columbus on May 12.
Just two Democrats have won the presidency without Ohio since 1900 and no Republican has done so.

Q: Does it stink? May-07-07
A: It’s not too bad. My dogs ran away, but in fairness to the witch, remember that dogs have a sense of smell far superior to ours.
It even makes the table taller -
Whoopie. The second bid came in. Note: the money will go to FR.
