NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- "Will he announce?" asked the Lincoln Club of Orange County's publication in preparation for Fred Thompson's appearance at the organization's 45th annual dinner here Friday night. A rumor, totally unfounded, ran rampant before his speech that Thompson would declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination at the dinner lectern. In fact, he did not even hint at this prospect during a performance that was a letdown for the packed audience of conservative Republicans.
"It was not Reaganesque." "No red meat." "Too low key." That was the preponderant reaction I heard to Thompson's half-hour presentation (leavened by a few favorable comments, mostly by women, that he was more "statesmanlike" and "presidential" than the announced candidates). Lincoln Club members, like many conservative Republicans, have been unimpressed by the existing field of Republican hopefuls and envisioned Thompson as the second coming of Ronald Reagan. They did not get it Friday night.
The excitement aroused in melancholy Republican ranks by the politician-commentator-actor will not be doused by one lackluster performance. Nevertheless, his first speech since his unexpected presidential boom began suggests that Thompson needs preparation if he does take up this daunting burden. The deeper concern by some supporters is whether the tepid reaction in Orange County will shake what had seemed his clear resolve to make the race.

Is Novak still a Hagel fan?
Novak’s been a good source for “insider” news, but, to damn with faint praise, his analysis has been almost as good as Dick Morris’ for about a decade.
Fred Thompson will be the next POTUS.
And I’m taking all bets. :-]
That’s bold my friend, very bold. Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy, but I just don’t see a majority of our attention deficit, hollywood loving populace going for him. I think anyone over 50 would vote for him in a heartbeat, but 20s-40s would be tough.
It started out strong, but dragged on at the end (I only caught the second half, but have just re-watched, so that might explain my first impression). Also, maybe my expectations were too high.
I loved the Novak dig...

“Thats bold my friend, very bold.”
Well, hopefully it will rub off on my fellow alumnus, Fred. LOL
I suppose there’s no point in noting that this article, with various titles, has been posted at least 3 times already, if not more (Novak appears so many places that change the title that even search isn’t that helpful).
We probably could use a rule about known columnists, maybe have a designated poster or post from the primary source only with that source’s title.
Novak’s just another left-wing “skunk-at-the-picnic”.
An old hat political scribe who has been left behind by time, circumstances and the internet.
Fred’s a refreshing example of America’s growing desire for decent folks in high places for a change.
But he’s about as “presidential” as my choclate Lab.
What garbage.
In watched the speech and thought Fred did fantastic. It seems some Republicans expectations are just too high. There seems to be some Republicans just want to be miserable and feel sorry for themselves.
If you can excited for George W Bush and you can’t get excited for Fred Thompson than there’s something wrong with you. To criticize Thompson’s speech as lackluster after 6 years of GWB? For me it was a breath of fresh air. I think people are simply out there trying to keep us as demoralized as possible.

Ta-Da! No more calls, folks, we have a winner!
The ‘Rats and Fred’s GOP opponent’s backers want to discourage Fredheads. Fredophobia is terrible thing to watch.
The only review of Fred’s speech that really counts is the one by its intended audience - those he was delivering it TO - the Lincoln Club of Orange County.
Well, whaddya know, right there on their home page they say “Thompson a Big Hit at Annual Dinner!”
