No longer inevitable: Hillary stuck in real race
Townhall.com ^ | May 6, 2007 | Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

Hillary's pollster Mark Penn recently claimed that she was leading the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in all states in all the polls. Not so fast, Mark.

The latest Rasmussen poll, concluded on April 26, shows Sen. Barack Obama ahead of Sen. Clinton for the first time, albeit by the slim margin of 32-30. Two weeks ago, Rasmussen had the race tied; before that, he had her constantly in the lead. Almost all the national polls show Clinton's lead dwindling, and most show her with only a single-digit lead over Obama.

The sense of Hillary's inevitability as the Democratic nominee is clearly vanishing.

Why is Clinton losing steam? Because we are discovering that we don't like her. Gallup has her favorability rating dropping from 58 percent in February to only 45 percent in April. The decrease in her popularity spans all demographic groups. Gallup has her dropping sharply even among her core constituencies: Democrats, liberals and single women.

That is why we will see more of Bill and less of Hillary. They will try to give the impression to the loyals that Bill is actually running. Hillary has already tried the two-fer: elect her and get Bill as Ambassador to the World.

When Hillary had to call for Bill's assistance in Selma, that signaled that her campaign was in trouble.

I might get flamed for this but... all in all, if I had a choice between Hillary and Obama -- I'd pick Obama

Why?

He doesn't have the agenda for power (the people who do scare me more than anything else).

Let me back up a little bit. I recently had a very surprising talk with my friend. He is extremely conservative. He said that he watched a documentary on Obama. And he was impressed. That is saying a lot for him.

OTOH, I would love to have a Republican in the WH again. No matter if he is socially liberal or not. I think the most important thing for me is character. And ANYONE but Hillary is an absolute must...

So flame away, I have a fire extinguisher. But remember, all in all -- let's pursue the life we want -- and quit worrying about the things you can't control...

Because we are discovering that we don't like her.

My jaw dropped today at work, when a co-worker (teacher complete with 'rat bumper stickers on his vehicle) said that he WOULD NOT vote for Hillary. Does not like her. Said she was like a "dictator".

Morris is interesting to listen to, BUT

Sometime late 2006 he said on BOR TV that the time to enter the Presidential race was over.

It may be over, but I think Fred needs to speak up first. I think he disagrees.

Who will he vote for? Fred? My guess, not even knowing your friend, is no.

Third party? Seesh, I thought WE had the corner on stupid voters.

I wonder if Hillary would settle for VP?

Obama better be good to his Secret Service detail.

Seems to me they got another 6 months to decide to enter race. I havn’t paid any attention at all yet. It’s too early.

Is Newt even running? I don’t even know.

Hold on just a second. I thought Dick Morris already anointed Hillary with the Presidency? How could she possibly have a primary challenge?

Don’t know, don’t care.

He’s a very smart, well spoken, man who seems to have lost his conservative compass.

We owe him a lot for 1994, as it would not have happened with him. We don’t owe him a chance to run for President though.

Unlike her NY senate race, where she could take a low profile and still win, she’s now being debated and has to talk to the public at large. And the public at large doesn’t like the way she comes accross.

No matter if he is socially liberal or not. I think the most important thing for me is character.

Just to name two socially liberal views-- pro-gun control & pro-death and people who hold these views-- says an awful lot about these people's character. It tells me they have no strength of character. Socially liberal views are about money, power and greed. That doesn't scream good character to me.

I strongly suspect she’s waiting to play some sort of sympathy card.

No idea what it could be.

Has anyone been keeping score on Dick Morris’ predictions and observations? Just my own casual observation, but I have found that whatever Mr. Morris predicts, the exact opposite typically happens.

“We don’t owe him a chance to run for President though.”

I think he’s got way too much baggage to run.
