GIULIANI URGES CLINTON TO RELEASE ISRAELI SPY (1999, Jonathan Pollard)
Times Union | Sep 29, 1999 | Stewart M. Powell

Posted on 05/06/2007 11:57:38 AM PDT by calcowgirl

WASHINGTON -- New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged President Clinton Tuesday to free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, a move that could boost Jewish support for the Republican's prospective Senate campaign -- and complicate a possible run in 2000 by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

...

Regarding Pollard, Giuliani said the Israeli deserves presidential clemency because the life sentence for espionage given him in 1987 goes "way beyond" sentences given in the past to American citizens convicted of spying for a U.S. ally.

Pollard, a former civilian U.S. Navy intelligence analyst, has already served a longer prison term than enemy spies who are routinely traded by their governments, according to Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and associate attorney general in the Justice Department.

"It seems to me that there was an appropriate basis on which the President could exercise his discretion and cut that particular sentence," Giuliani said, adding that Pollard has "served much more than anyone else convicted of the same thing."

Giuliani stressed that he was restating a position that he had taken on the Pollard case "a couple of years ago" rather than announcing a new position.

The Clinton administration continues to review clemency for Pollard following repeated requests by the Israeli government. ...

...

Giuliani deflected questions about whether he would endorse Texas Gov. George W. Bush as the Republican presidential nominee. The Associated Press quoted a top New York GOP official as saying the mayor could make such an announcement on Thursday.

I like your tag “Mission ‘08 - Take back the House & Senate”. We really need to keep that in focus as well.

After seeing the results of the French election there is no reason why we cannot get a real conservative in the WH in 2008 and win those 2 houses back.

I was hoping Newt would jump into the race but Im tilting more towards Fred Thompson now.

I think the republicans would have a better chance in winning back the House and Senate IF whoever the minority leader in the Senate is replaced. It’s the first time that I’ve not been able to give you the name of the minority leader in over a decade. Same with the republican in the House. Poll your friends and family, they will not be able to tell you who they are either.

Whoever too Mehlman’s job needs to go too. Perhaps that’s where Newt would be most useful. I say Newt or Tom Delay should be working the headquarters of the GOP between now and 2008.

Nothing seems to be happening with what we got now.

I’m supporting David Rockerfeller as a write-in candidate. Rudy is just too far to the right for my tastes.

McConnell...I’ve been pretty unhappy with him. Anything is possible. Everything takes work. I want both, but the Senate is extremely important to grab back IMO.

“Nothing seems to be happening with what we got now.”

I predict some pushing to be on the horizon. And we can all push as well as post. It’s our right and it’s our duty I believe!

LOL! Well, if Rudy got 8 years conservatism will have been redefined by the liberals and your David Rockerfeller will be considered the next Ronald Reagan in 2014. Scary but true.

When it comes to reasons why someone will or will not vote for Rudy, it shouldn't be based on ancient family history

I agree. There's plenty of reasons not to vote for Rudy. One big reason is Fred Thompson.

Who do you support? And why?

Nobody as yet, but definitely not Rudy. Don't believe me? Do a search of my posts.

I answered your question, so now answer mine. What does something a Giuliani family member did or didn't do almost two freaking centuries ago have to do with Rudy?

Honestly, I thinks it's more healthy to be posting that stuff on the Obamas and Hillarys past.

You're not going to see this guy seriousy digging up dirt on another republican candidate before an election is held. I mean, I would'nt want to put myslelf in a situation where I end up having to advocate for the same guy I attacked because he is running against a Clinton.

I dont hate Rudy. I do have a problem with his stance on guns and not fond of his abortion stance either. He's definately not one of my top choices.

If it were a choice between Rudy and Hillary or Obama. Rudy's got my vote. Cant say that I'd be overly excited to go out and passionately try to get him voters. Because of that, I think it would be a political problem for the GOP if he did win the primary.

To answer your question, Sometimes it's better to exploit absurdity by being absurb.

Rudy did prosecute John Gotti, which in New York takes tremendous courage

He did prosecute some mobsters; I don't believe Gotti was among them.

I`ll settle for someone who is for Victory with no conditions in the only issue that really matters.

What issue is that? And is Rudy the only candidate that holds the "for Victory" position you hold?

What is wrong with support for an ally? Could anti-semitism be a basis for this attack?

... [speechless]

What exposed Giuliani as a fraud in the Arafat case was that Giuliani had actually honored Irish Republican Army spokesman Gerry Adams at an official New York City function just a few weeks earlier.

"Tough on terrorists," my @ss. If Arafat had been Irish instead of Palestinian, he'd have gotten a massage -- and more -- from Giuliani.

Rudy Giuliani never prosecuted John Gotti. Giuliani was a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, while Gotti was prosecuted in the Brooklyn District.

Rudy matters to Rudy. Beyond that, I’m not sure.

FYI, in case you’re wondering why I pinged you to that, I goofed. It was supposed to be jedward, given his discussion with poster. Sorry ‘bout that!

By listening to the things that some say, it’s very easy to know how they think and whether it’s even worth the time for discussion. I’ve been known to lead a horse to water and even dunk its head in it, but hey, if he’s willing to dehydrate at will, there’s not much one can do :)
