NEWPORT BEACH, California (Reuters) - It could be the defining role of Fred Thompson's varied career -- the reluctant politician who saves a foundering party, restores its conservative principles and keeps it in the White House.
For Thompson, the drama is real enough, even if the final act is uncertain. The former Tennessee senator, Watergate counsel and star of films like "The Hunt for Red October," has been exploring a potential 2008 Republican presidential run and is expected to make his decision known soon.
Thompson's possible candidacy, fueled by conservative dissatisfaction with the current crop of Republican candidates, has generated intense grass-roots interest and curiosity.
Thompson, who plays a district attorney on NBC's "Law and Order," already places third among Republicans in most polls, behind former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain but ahead of eight other candidates, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

How’s he gonna do it if he doesn’t say “I’m Fred Thompson and I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.”?
It’s over in 9 months, Fred...
Oops...forgot to put on the goggles. There’s the magical candidate that doesn’t need to campaign, fund raise, or partake in debates.
You go Fred....
PING
Thompson has so much gravitas it is scary...hee hee...and my choice for VP is Duncan Hunter...if Thompson does not pick him for VP, then Hunter should be Sec/Def.
Don’t you see a problem with states being free to practice polygamy or same-sex marriage?
State diversity on marriage should not become a constitutional right. I would oppose such an amendment.
Did you watch the GOP debate, starring Chris Matthews? The questions were petty, silly, devisive and irrelevent. The candidates responded to the silly, meaningless questions and no substantial topics were discussed.
Meanwhile, Fred was on interview shows, blogging, and on webcasts, talking about things like smaller government, federalism, the WOT, and the like. This may not work for Fred, but at least he is getting his message out. The others... not so good.
By delaying, Fred is actually controlling his message, rather than letting the MSM control it for him.
Listen to the interview again. He said that he believes in an amendment that would allow states to NOT recognize the civil unions formed in other states. I think it makes sense.
Small government and federalism is a two-edged sword. If one believes in intrusive government when it suits their interest, but small government otherwise, he is no different than the liberals who believe the same thing. I think it is great to hear a guy with a basic philosophy of government rather than one who simply has a different wish list than the others.
EXACTLY!
I suggest you go back and listen carefully :)
>>>THE DEMS,LIBS,AND MSM ARE AFRAID HE WILL.<<<<
This is the part that confuses me a little.
Fred Thompson did some really excellent work. Take a look at this link jellybean posted:

>>>jellybean’s link to Fred Thompson’s thoughts on campaign finance reform and the Asia fundraising scandal.<<<
That needs to be plastered everywhere!
But, Thompson went to the MSM. Hollywood is basically run by dems and libs. Hollywood is the MSM.
That part bothers me.
Very well said.
By delaying, Fred is actually controlling his message, rather than letting the MSM control it for him.
It sure looks like its working too! Go Fred.
See #32.
>>>rather than letting the MSM control it for him
I believe his contract is up in June. So that is the MSM controlling it.
Oh... so we need to be rescued now. Eat sht WaPo...
I certainly hope so. RESCUE is the right word--because a liberal like JulieAnnie will destroy the Republican Party (not to mention the conservative cause) as we know it.
If you want to DIVIDE and SPLIT the Republican Party WIDE-OPEN,,,
a lLIBERAL like JulieAnnie is JUST THE MAN FOR THE JOB!
Is that like Patton "rescuing" the boys of 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge?
I agree. I was pleased with how well those Republican candidates did in that debate despite a leftist agenda-driven format.
