Last week's debate among 10 Republican presidential candidates encompassed all the usual issues and then some, but some of its most striking moments centered on two topics: abortion and evolution.
While his opponents restated their opposition to abortion rights, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani put himself on all sides of the issue, including staking out a new position that he would be "OK" with the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion.
But he also said he would be "OK" if a conservative judge upheld the decision because it was a long-established precedent.
Giuliani said in the debate that he opposed using public money to finance abortions, but just last month, he told CNN that he supported using public money, the same position he had held as mayor. And while he said he hated abortion, he said he saw it ultimately as a matter of conscience, concluding, "I would respect a woman's right to make a different choice."
Some surprises
As he has ventured into Republican primary territory, often dominated by the party's conservatives, Giuliani has edged toward a more nuanced position on abortion.
Still, his acquiescence in the debate Thursday to the idea of a repeal of Roe v. Wade surprised some longtime supporters.
"I was appalled," said Kelli Conlin, president of Naral Pro-Choice New York, which stayed neutral when Giuliani was a candidate for the Senate running against Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Conlin said that she recognized that it took "courage" to be the only person on a stage to stand up for abortion rights but said that if Giuliani became the Republican presidential nominee in 2008, she doubted that her group would remain neutral again.

I and many others have only been stating the facts on Rooty’s record and translating the likely outcome of his nomination based on the record of the MSM and the Republican primary voters.
Anyone that thinks the MSM isn’t pimping for Rooty is smoking rope or doesn’t have a good grasp of politics.
The only reason that abortion was mentioned in the debate was because liberals think they are on the correct side of that issue with the voters.
They wanted the other 9 candidates on the record on that and didn’t know Rooty would come off as stupid as he did.
Notice there was no mention of 2 issues that they know liberals like Rooty are on the wrong side of public opinion, queer rights and gun control.
Hammering those two home would have pounded Rooty’s coffin shut!
You haven’t heard the talking heads on network TV mention a thing about Rooty’s “Bernie Kerik” problem have you?
Kerik’s mob ties trial is still going on and Rooty is in that up to his neck. That one alone is enough to destroy Rooty after he won the nomination.
Rooty is the RATS key to the White House and they will pimp their little Whore to any fool that will follow him off the cliff.
We are completely ignoring the people discussing the real issues.
Absolutely. You won't hear very much if anything from the MSM about that scandal until after the convention, and then if Rudy is nominated it will be front page headlines and mentioned at every newsbreak on the air.
The Washington Post did print an article on Kerik and his connection to Rudy, but the article is careful to say that Rudy withdrew his support for Kerik'a appointment to an important federal post after the scandal became public.

Federal prosecutors have told Bernard B. Kerik, whose nomination as homeland security secretary in 2004 ended in scandal, that he is likely to be charged with several felonies, including tax evasion and conspiracy to commit wiretapping. Kerik's indictment could set the stage for a courtroom battle that would draw attention to Kerik's extensive business and political dealings with former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who personally recommended him to President Bush for the Cabinet. Giuliani, the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination according to most polls, later called the recommendation a mistake.
Women who want "choice" to empower themselves socially with an active sex life before marriage have an array of birth comntrol devices and methods that boggle anyone's mind. They are easily available, and are often used with parental consent for minors.
That makes the abortion issue purely political.
Women have choice. And anyone who does not point that out, including candidates like Giulliani, should bite the abortion litmus test bullet, and lose on the issue.
Notice no mention of the fact that Rooty knew of Kerik’s mob ties before he made him police commissioner and recommended him for the homeland security chief.
No mention that it may be proved in Kerik’s trial that Rooty lied under oath to the grand jury.
