Rudy Giuliani portrayed himself as the heir to Ronald Reagan at the first Republican debate last night, talking tough on terrorism - but struggling to present a clear and consistent position on abortion.
Giuliani, who strongly supported abortion rights during his eight years as mayor, said he would not object to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision affirming abortion.
"It would be OK to repeal it," said Giuliani, who is courting key anti-abortion voters in the GOP primaries.
But he then added that "it would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as a precedent" - meaning upholding Roe vs. Wade.
"I think the court has to make that decision - and then the country can deal with it."
Giuliani was the only one of the 10 candidates onstage at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., to say it would be OK if Roe were upheld.

Re: post #26 - I am in strong agreement with you.
Seems that there's a lot of Republicans that aren't conservatives, or leastwise favor a statist solution to individual problems.

Proud Christian conservative religious wacko here. Think about this, if Christ is first in your life, how do you keep from “putting him in the mix” on anything you do?

His stance on abortion alone makes Giuliani a lesser man. Not even Bill Clinton went so far as to favor taxpayer-funded abortions.

Reagan fought to cut the budget, but instead ballooned the deficit and the national debt. We don't need that now, no matter how beneficial Reagan's tax policies were. Our spendthrift Congress was, at least in part, to blame for the budget deficit. One might recall that in 1987, Congress overrode a presidential veto to pass a pork-laden spending bill into law.

Rudy will be the next Ron Reagan, Jr. ROTFL!
To: Zeon Cowboy
Sure its fair--ESPECIALLY since he was the ONLY one to blatantly try to DISTANCE HIMSELF FROM REAGAN with his comment, "I am a Republican"--when asked if he was a "Reagan Republican"! How much clearer do you have to be than to BOAST that you are NOT a Reagan Republican,,,or NOT even a conservative? He has to live with that comment now. It's outrageous to act otherwise now after having said that.
No other candidate has so clearly and publicly slapped 'Reaganism' in the face. (Just for good measure--Rudy was sooooooo liberal--that the Republicans refused to invite him to the '96 Convention).
It's OUTRAGEOUS that he would try to claim any sort of Reagan legacy now. Absolutely OUTRAGEOUS!!! Has he no shame?
If you want TWO political parties, BOTH to the 'left-of'center',,,JulieAnnie is JUST THE MAN FOR THE JOB!
