Green tea can be harmful in large quantities
10:00 05 May 2007
From New Scientist Print Edition.
Green tea is good for you, but only if drunk in moderation. While the polyphenols in green tea are credited with preventing heart disease and cancer, it seems they can cause liver and kidney damage if consumed in very large quantities, a review of studies into the toxicity of polyphenols has shown.
"People shouldn't be too alarmed by this, but those taking supplements may experience problems," says lead author Chung Yang of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
He stresses that up to 10 small cups of green tea a day is fine. Problems are likely in people who take supplements, which can contain up to 50 times as much polyphenol as a single cup of tea.
Yang's review cites experiments in which rodents and dogs died from liver poisoning when given very large doses of polyphenols. He also reports cases of people with liver toxicity after overdosing on green-tea-based supplements. Their symptoms disappeared when they stopped taking the pills, only to return when they started taking them again. (Chemical Research in Toxicology, vol 20, p 583).

Let’s take it off the market!! Leave the Tylenol alone... it causes cirrhosis and cancer at a much faster rate...../s
Thanks, I’m right on the edge of that 10 cup a day limit.

The biggest cause of cancer is being a laboratory rat.
If a little is good, a lot isn’t necessarily better.
“Green tea is good for you, but only if drunk in moderation.”
Booze is good for you, but only if drunk in moderation.
All things in moderation.
The same has been said about green eggs and ham.
That’s why I only consume pizza and beer. The world’s only perfect foods!
My ratio:
(1)Pizza/(18)Beers/per day.

What about peanuts and pretzels and chili dogs?
This guy disagrees with Mr. Yang.

People have been drinking green tea for thousands of years without a problem. It is typical of the modern magic pill mentality that they cram the contents of 50 cups of tea into a pill. If one cup of tea is good for you, then 50 times that amount is even better, especially if it is packed into one magic pill! Evidently the Chinese and Japanese, who have turned the preparation and enjoyment of fine tea into an art form, have mis-used tea all these years. The proper thing is for a busy American to avoid the “unpleasant” task of drinking tea by just gulping down a magic tea pill with something really healthy that tastes good like one of those flat “diet” sodas, bleah!
Milk has been deemed to be deadly in laboratory rats. Researchers found that when lab rats are given 10 gallons of milk a day, they explode.

Water is harmful in large quantities.
I have dropped soda, Gatorade, vitamin water, and even most fruit juice (except fresh-squeezed) in favor of cold green tea. I worry about heart disease, and hope the claims for this product are somewhat well-founded. I find it not only refreshing, but better-tasting than regular “iced tea.”
