What made you think he was here illegally? I didn’t see any mention of that in the article.
Location makes it an easy assumption to make. Although, I'd be surprised.....I don't know that there's a big problem with illegals driving 18-wheelers.

California has about 35 million residents. Of that number, 33% are of Hispanic origin (from the 2000 census. That’s roughly 11 million people. Yes, California has a high number of illegal aliens. But you certainly can’t make the case that every hispanic here is here illegally. And, I would venture a guess that a trucking company isn’t going to hire drivers who are here illegally to operate their big rigs, if they can help it. The liablity would be too great.
how much worse is it going to be with the nafta and the mexican trucks and drivers (from what i’ve read, no real training nor safety regulations on their trucks) driving along our freeways?

Our Congress is working their asses off getting Mexican trucks and drivers cleared to be driving the Freeways to your neighborhood....
Russian roulette makes more sense than allowing THOUSANDS of trucks with undetermined safety being driven by Mexicans with undetermined qualifications — hauling only God knows what into the country......
All goods should be stopped at the border and goods transfered onto inspected American trucks with American qualified drivers....or put onto American trains..

I don’t know what to say. I can’t imagine what this family is going to go through or how they can survive this. I hope they have some sort of faith that can help them.
Our country has a big problem with illegals.
However conservatives here at FR have their own problem if we quickly ASSume that every person here with a spanish name is an illegal from Mexico!
Critics of FR are quick label us racists when they see a post like this.
The driver may be a US citizen and until proven otherwise doesn’t deserve to be blasted for being an illegal.
If you want to blast him for something, blast him for his poor ability to drive.
And please, try to clean up your act.

Personally I think the big rig drivers in So. CA are some of the most patient, talented drivers in the world. They have to put up with cars pulling in front of them with drivers who have no concept of how difficult it is to stop one of those big rigs. This also leads me to believe that the driver of THIS rig was NOT driving the way he should have been on that freeway (one of the worst in So.CA) as he should have been prepared to stop at any second.
What a terrible, terrible thing to happen to this couple. Prayers for them.

The freeways are quite a slaughter house and maiming factory.
My friend at works wife was killed by a tow truck operator that did not do his job correctly.
There will always be accidents. But nearly all of them are preventable.
If this guy is illegal that is only part of the problem.
People are not taught how to drive very well. There are some very dangerous and reckless fools out there. DUI is another major problem we do not take seriously enough in this nation.
I went through quite a bit of training to learn to fly.
I think driving should involve more training then it does now and more aggressivly weed out the dangerous folks.
