LBJ was certainly capable of it. He was an extremely nasty man.
When he got into office he managed to lose the Vietnam War and finish the work FDR started toward bankrupting our economy.

I was in elementary school when it happened and I remember to this day for some strange reason that I was walking to school with my friend and we were talking about it and we decided that it was Johnson that order him killed.
I have no idea why all these years later I would even remember this but, it must have left a lasting impression on me.

In November 2003, the History Channel ran a week-long special on the JFK assassination. Each night examined the various theories. Most of them were too complicated and cock-eyed to have any credibility. Particularly "the CIA did it" theory. We've all seen how leaky and unreliable that agency is.
Then came the night on the "LBJ had it done" theory. Very simple and straightforward in covering motive, opportunity and execution. Very credible with the small number of people involved as well as their track record in helping LBJ's rise in Texas politics. Particular telling was when they interviewed LBJ's former mistress who once asked him about this theory. She said it was the only time she'd ever seen LBJ get angry at her and warned her in no uncertain terms to ever speak of it again.

I disagree that LBJ was in any way capable of it. LBJ was in his element making good-old-boy deals across a table and/or room, but was intimidated as hell by the White House advisors he found when he took office. He deferred to them almost completely on virtually everything since they all had Harvard and Yale degrees, and he figured they were smarter than he was.
A man like that doesn’t cook up a murder scheme.

A common error is that the name of the Commission that investigated JFK's death was the Warren Commission. The correct name was the "The President's Commission"; which was headed by Earl Warren. I have a copy of that report from when it was first issued and regardless of what any quiz show says, it was the President's Commission.
