The reaction, from what I can tell, has been mixed. I personally was quite disappointed with it. As soon as I heard the soundtrack in minor key, I had deep suspicion, so that probably colored how I viewed the whole thing. My mother described it as “Mostly factual, some spots not entirely friendly, some misconception.”
Sounds like a bill to me.
Such a judgment is between the Lord, the bishop, and the individual. I personally have no idea who around me at church holds a temple recommend and who does not. That is very closely guarded information.
I asked Paperdoll to clarify how he/she perceived that the LDS Church was more controlling of its members than other Christian denominations. Paperdoll declined to elaborate.
From what I saw, DU made the first post to NNN. If there were previous posts deleted, I didn't see them. Although NNN did some whining, he was certainly not the only one, do you agree? And a thick skin is certainly required of all participants in these discussions.
There are others I would describe as pests here also. Not you, BTW ;)
The tithing settlement actually lists how much someone has tithed, not how much they made.
You don’t live in Utah do you?
“I dont care how many of you want to tag-team and make it appear that this isnt so, but Romney is definitely a good, practicing believing Mormon.”
Who tried that? I don’t think any of us have cast aspersions on his “Mormonism,” if you will.
The point is, he chooses not to inject his theology into his public life.
IMO, anything coming from PBS has, as a primary objective, the intent of damaging the Republicans. The Bill Moyers shows are a prime example. I think, also, this was to set the stage for the media attacks on Romney to come. There were clips and sound bites in it that will most likely show up in campaign ads for clinton, should Mitt be the nominee.
There are many mormons that would be quite upset should this happen.
I should have added that there are many conservative Christians who would be upset should these TV ads happen.
You dont live in Utah do you?
LOL!
It is standard practice for a given person to meet annually with the bishop to declare his or her tithing status. Traditionally, this happens at the end of the year, and for organizational sake is done by appointment. If the member fails to schedule a time, then the bishop’s clerk will be proactive, as the bishop is required by the Church to supply this information for every member.
It is not a temple recommend interview.
It goes something like this:
“Do you pay a full and honest tithe?”
“Yes.”
“Very good, thank you. [marks a check box] Is there anything else I can do for you?”
I don’t know what happens when you say “no.” I’ve never done it. I would suppose that he would ask if there was a reason why, and see if there was any way he could help.
If you do answer “no,” however, you will need to change your ways in order to hold a temple recommend.
“Obfuscation?”
Huh?
Then I must have been misinformed by members who told of taking income and tax statements to the tithing settlement, right?
Oh yeah, there is one who will go unnamed, who appears, to not represent either side, yet curiously attacks only the "anti-Mormon." Who in their right mind would call anyone an anti-mormon except a Mormon? People of other religious backgrounds have probably never heard or used the term in their life. Oh and thanks for not calling me a "pest." I'm sure there are plenty who think that I am! LOL
I agree that such attacks were unwarranted, CC. My offer still stands if it happens again. Such events embarrass me, and I’m only too eager to exhort my fellow members to be better examples.
I would ask you not to overgeneralize those attacks, though. Some are overzealous; most, I think, are not.
Anyway, time for the second shift to come in ;) I don't know how the "Sunday Morning Talk Show" thread has been able to proceed without my input this morning. ;) Must check in there.
Waht about the PMs I get. They are even more vicious....
Like I said though, I come from a long, long line of persecuted Mormons - I guess I inherited the belief that persecution shows how right I am and how wrong my opponent is.........
..........and of course that’s not true. Persecution proves nothing at all.
“The tithing settlement actually lists how much someone has tithed, not how much they made.”
That’s true, there are official statements given to us each year for financial and tax purposes.
Nope, and I never want to.
I have a very nice little soapbox about what I call the “Mormon culture.” But that’s a topic for another time.
I agree; it’s why I hold to my “backfire” thesis.
