In their first debate, staged at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Republican presidential rivals vied to pay homage to the late president even as they criticized -- or at best, ignored -- the current Republican in the White House, George W. Bush.
Several candidates made reference to the Bush administration's mismanagement of the four-year-old war in Iraq, as if that were a given. Arizona Sen. John McCain defended his support for the war now, saying "it's on the right track." But he added, as he does routinely on the campaign trail, "The war was terribly mismanaged and we now have to fix a lot of the mistakes that were made."
"There was a real error of judgment" from the war's start, said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. "Those generals told us, early on, it would take 300,000 troops to successfully go in and stabilize Iraq. Instead we gave them a limited number of troops and a budget and said, 'You have to do it with this.'"
...The 10 Republicans on the stage here mostly were united in supporting the administration's current military efforts to end the war; the exception was Texas Rep. Ron Paul, a war foe and self-professed isolationist. That dynamic was the opposite then of last week's first Democratic presidential debate, in which all eight candidates in varying degrees called for withdrawing U.S. troops.

The leftists may be ringing up their Congress critters about the war, but who else is? None, IMHO. The war is only thought about when someone comes up with a poll and publishes it.

Yes, Fred’s main claim to fame and what is catapulting him to the first choice is that he is an actor. Say no more; America will be mesmerized! Hard to understand the orgasmic noise coming from many of you Fred lovers. I don’t think Fred warrants being made this deity. Gonna have to come crashing down to earth pretty soon.

I can not speak for others, but for me it is his solid commitment to federalism and limited government. Other than Ron Paul, there is hardly any other candidates in the GOP primaries that are making this an issue. After eight years of Bush and his “big government conservatism”, I am aching for a leader who will steer a course back to the Goldwater/Reagan brand of limited government conservatism. I consider the choice a no-brainer.
What is conservative about Fred Thompson? What is his most notable achievement, besides voting for McCain/Feingold?
