Sure, the president can order SS protection for darn near anyone he pleases at any time, for good cause, I would imagine.

Anyone can be a candidate, just get a few signatures, file your papers, post a few bucks, and, voila! you are a candidate. Right now there appear to be 8 Democrat and 10 Republican candidate. That alone does not qualify the candidate for SS protection.

A “Major Party” generally is one which shows respectable support in polling. I think it’s around 15%, could be less. Nonetheless, there are few political parties that qualify as ‘major.’

The major party nominees, those who have won their party’s nomination, (or have clearly garnered enough party delegates through the primary process to ascertain that they will be the party’s nominee) are guaranteed SS protection.

All candidates of even of the major parties are not automatically afforded that protection or this wouldn’t be a news story.

This is a staged threat to take the attention off the Republican debate tonight and put it back on Obama.

TITLE 18 > PART II > CHAPTER 203 > § 3056
§ 3056. Powers, authorities, and duties of United States Secret Service

(a) Under the direction of the Secretary of Homeland Security, the United States Secret Service is authorized to protect the following persons:
(1) The President, the Vice President (or other officer next in the order of succession to the Office of President), the President-elect, and the Vice President-elect.

(2) The immediate families of those individuals listed in paragraph (1).

(3) Former Presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes, except that protection of a spouse shall terminate in the event of remarriage unless the former President did not serve as President prior to January 1, 1997, in which case, former Presidents and their spouses for a period of not more than ten years from the date a former President leaves office, except that—
(A) protection of a spouse shall terminate in the event of remarriage or the divorce from, or death of a former President; and

(B) should the death of a President occur while in office or within one year after leaving office, the spouse shall receive protection for one year from the time of such death:

Provided, That the Secretary of Homeland Security shall have the authority to direct the Secret Service to provide temporary protection for any of these individuals at any time if the Secretary of Homeland Security or designee determines that information or conditions warrant such protection.
(4) Children of a former President who are under 16 years of age for a period not to exceed ten years or upon the child becoming 16 years of age, whichever comes first.

(5) Visiting heads of foreign states or foreign governments.

(6) Other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States and official representatives of the United States performing special missions abroad when the President directs that such protection be provided.

(7) Major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and, within 120 days of the general Presidential election, the spouses of such candidates. As used in this paragraph, the term “major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates” means those individuals identified as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security after consultation with an advisory committee consisting of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the minority leader of the House of Representatives, the majority and minority leaders of the Senate, and one additional member selected by the other members of the committee.
The protection authorized in paragraphs (2) through (7) may be declined.

“There’s also the possibility of the B. Hussien Obama camp making up the threat for the publicity...”

That is my thought, as well. Victim politics.

Don’t believe there was a threat. Just that hitlery has ss so he wants some too.

osamaObama set the table for this scenario months ago.

I'm with you. I remember back when Obama was thinking about running, an interview with him and his wife where she said she was worred about him running because of "threats to his life". I remember thinking then, that it was a ploy to get all of the blacks "worked up" and gain their support.

I think that is exactly what this is too.

A statement from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he authorized the protection detail for Obama.

Wow--this hate-filled administration, the one with racists and disdain for minorities has decided to protect B. Hussein Obama?? Imagine.

I am reminded of “Executive Orders”.

The assassin was part of the Presdiential Detail, and when security got tightened, it brought the assassin close in and with an unobstructed shot at the target.

I also recall a thread not long ago, how Barack Hussein declined a detail. I guess Minister Farrakhan didn’t provide enough street muscle...

Thing is the political parties are not Constitutional except as being Corporations. So Obama is in the system whether or not a political party nominates him. All the declared candidates are, although whether a candidate who has filed (for tax purposes) automatically gets protection would be up to the Chief Exec.

The Department of Homeland Security was established with the passage of (Public Law 107-296) which in part, transfered the United States Secret Service from the Department of the Treasury, to the new department effective March 1, 2003.

I must have missed that, but Treasury never did make sense to me. USSS does have an interesting history.

I think that is exactly what this is too.

I guess once he pulled ahead of Hilary in the polls the protection became warranted. :)

Well, guess what? I missed THAT law too. LOL. Thanks for giving the information. Actually, it was because the Treasury had more agents than other groups like FBI, that were already DOING that sort of work. So... then, that means...

logically, Obama was threatened, and since he is a “candidate” and is a very VISIBLE one, that makes him a major one. And the Dept of homeland security has the discretion to do pretty much wha tthey deem necessary to protect the public.

So... they ordered him protected.

This doesn’t go up to the President most likely

Clintons behind this? Dennis Miller jokingly quipped that Obama better keep his head on a swivel.

Somehow, I doubt that the secret service agents protecting obama will be carrying cell phones so they can call 911 if he were to be threatened. I wonder what his position is on the 2nd Amendment./s
