That was my thought. I can’t believe some of the tactless remarks I’ve read elsewhere about this. Is common courtesy that hard to summon up?

The British have a tradition of bowing only to British peers, nobles, and royalty. Americans have a tradition of bowing to *nobody*.A trifle out of date, if I may say so. It's many years since I last saw one of my (British) compatriots bow to anybody - unlike, for example, the French or Japanese, who still seem to do it all the time.
