Reid Compromise Would Pull Troops, Re-Invade Iraq
by Scott Ott
(2007-05-03) A day after Congress failed to override a presidential veto of a Democrat-sponsored bill that would tie troop funding to a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed hope that his new compromise legislation might meet with greater success.
The Reid bill calls for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, followed by a waiting period of about 21 months, then a fully-funded re-invasion under more compelling circumstances, according to the text of the legislation.
Experts agree that a U.S. pull-out now would open the door for al Qaeda to make Iraq its base for launching global jihad. Sen. Reid said today that eliminating a safe haven for terrorists offers ample justification for invading a country, like the U.S. did to overthrow the Taliban regime in Afghanistan a war which Democrats still support.
The problem with the Iraq war, said Sen. Reid, is that George Bush ordered the invasion to get revenge on Saddam Hussein and to get Iraqi oil, under the pretense that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. My bill calls for a do-over, but this time we invade for the right reasons, when we have the right person in the White House.
Citing President Bill Clintons bombing of Iraq, Mr. Reid said, Democrats dont oppose military action in principle, so long as we have confidence in our commander-in-chief and support his rationale.
Under the terms of the measure, the re-invasion to destroy al Qaedas new Iraqi headquarters and expected network of Iraqi training camps, would start in January 2009, contingent upon an appropriate outcome of the U.S. presidential election in November 2008.
Ding Ding Ding!! There it is!
“George Bush ordered the invasion...to get Iraqi oil.”
Huh? Reid really believes that?
Well, oil cost a helluva lot less in March, 2003 than it does now. I’d say the alleged oil grab didn’t work out to well, Mr. Leader.
It’s almost too accurate to be funny.
Yep. Murtha wanted them redeployed to Okinawa. The dimmocrat talking points at the time included heavy use of the term "over the horizon."
said Sen. Reid, is that George Bush ordered the invasion to get revenge on Saddam Hussein and to get Iraqi oil”
this article is so preposterous, i don’t think its real.
Wait in nearby Okinawa for 21 months......yeah, that’s it.
You mean it really did not happen that way? I am shocked I tell you shocked!
Huh ??? Please explain.
This is satire from scrappleface right?
At first read, I thought it was a real story not satire.
Hmmm, sounds like a good idea to me. Next time let's invade it to conquer and pacify it and not as liberators, peace keepers and nation builders.
Why sir, you are correct - it is scrappleface.
The article is scrappleface... it’s satire, but always close to the truth.
Now, I never claimed to be a military genius, but I’m just wondering what Reid could possibly have in mind by drawing up a plan for an immediately withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Then a waiting period of 21 months.
Then a sweeping new surge in Iraq that would wipe out all of the new AQ headquarters and the training camps in Iraq. This surge would begin in January 2009, providing, of course, that there were an appropriate outcome for the November 2008 election.
So, let’s see — first he wanted all the troops to be withdrawn, starting in October of this year. Nary a mention in the old Reid Bill for any kind of re-attack plan.
Now he wants an immediate withdrawal of troops and — after a little while — a gangbusters redeployment.
Good Great Geronimo!
Reid sounds like he got ahold of Custer’s Big Battle Plan.
We’re doomed, folks.
I read the whole thing and didn’t see it was a sham until the end -
I know it’s scrappleface, but the sheer stupidity reid has demonstrated of late, kinda numbed me to the satire.
First I laughed when I realized, then I was sad because it wasn’t that hard to believe he’d said it.
We have a helluva a mess in D.C.
And his rationale is whatever you say it is, right, Harry Reid?
What is this about Congress sending the original vetoed bill back to the President, over and over and over?
The Democrat Congress is showing it’s true colors - bright to blood RED.
Don’t feel bad.
I spent 3 minutes writing an intense comment when it dawned on me, “What’s the source? Ah crap! They got me again!”.
Reid is such a clown, nothing surprises me.
