New York City Sues Gun Industry
By Mayor Rudy Giuliani
On June 20th, I was pleased to announce that the City of New York filed a lawsuit against two dozen major gun manufacturers and distributors. This is an industry which profits from the suffering of innocent people. The lawsuit is intended to end the free pass that the gun industry has enjoyed for a very long time, which has resulted in too many avoidable deaths. The suit alleges a number of illegal practices on the part of the gun manufacturers, including:
- Deliberately manufacturing many more firearms than can be bought for legitimate purposes such as hunting and law enforcement, and knowingly targeting these excess guns to criminals, youths and other persons unqualified to buy firearms;
- Deliberately undermining New York City's gun control laws by flooding other markets which have less stringent gun laws with firearms that the manufacturers know are destined to be illegally resold in New York City;
- Ignoring the illegal practices of gun distributors, many of whom openly engage in the above practices;
- Refusing to manufacture safer guns, with features such as trigger locks and "personalization" measures that allow only authorized persons to fire the weapon.
More than 30,000 Americans each year - including 4,200 children - die because of gun violence. In addition, the city has found evidence of advertisements by gun manufacturers that claim their guns don't show fingerprints. This feature serves no purpose unless the user is intending to use the weapon for illegal purposes.
It is our hope that this suit will result in substantial financial awards to the City for the many ways in which illegal practices and illegal guns harm New Yorkers; including the $17 million dollars each year that are spent by the City's Health and Hospitals Corporation treating gun-shot wounds.
Over the past six years, New York City has reduced crime and murder more than any City in the nation. Our success has been built, in large part, on the tireless efforts of the Police Department to remove guns from our streets. But 95% of the guns that our police seize come from outside the City of New York. Their job of keeping New York safe is made considerably more difficult because of less restrictive guns laws in other parts of the nation and because of the illegal and immoral practices of the gun industry. This lawsuit is an aggressive step towards restoring accountability to an industry that profits from the suffering of others.

Yeah, I want all those pro-Rudy flakes to come out of the woodwork and tell me what a great candidate he is! Ya'all want to tell me why he would do such a thing?
If this man is elected it will set the Second Ammendment back 200 years! It's going to be a little hard for him to come out as pro gun now, doncha think? That's okay, you people just keep drinkin' the kool aid!
I think I'm going to PUKE! I hate kool aid!

I remember reading all about the lawsuits and gun control attempts implemented by Rudy Guiliani. I remember being disgusted by him. So many FReepers seem to think his performance on 9/11 is enough to forget his previous persecution of constitutionally provisioned rights.
Rudy Guiliani would have made a great New York Senator. He might have even voted with Republicans most of the time.
Yet I'm not willing to gamble the future of this nation on a candidate that has never demonstrated a moment of conservatism outside of a brilliant moment of leadership during 9/11.
Any fool knows the enemy we are dealing with.
Rudy Guiliani is no fool.
But by no means is Rudy Guiliani a conservative, either.
That dog don't hunt in these here parts...lol!

You are right on and a good tag line to boot. He’s really coming out of the closet, there must be a big push coming up supported by all the Rudy minions, including a bunch of sell-out FReepers, the “go along to get along” crowd.
I feel a hostile push coming on concerning all firearms owners, database info being used and Gov. agencies amping up the pressure.
I see this sort of pressure by small town cops in the area where I live (I work for the County Court at Law), and yes, it’s really happening. The first question cops have been asking those who have been stopped on the simplest of violations (the all too handy LP light being out) is, “Do you have any WEAPONS?” Yep, there it is and it goes from a equipment malfunction (citation only offense) to a full blown arrest, jail time, probation. And this is in Texas.
I think that Guiliani is the spear head of something pernicious struggling to be born and you know what that is. We’re not all fools here.

And, as some of you know, I had a pistol carry permit in NYC for 19 years, but Rudy changed the rules for renewing the permits and wound up taking thousands away from law-abiders like me.
He doesn't get it.

What cracks me up, is opposition to Rudy over this, being desribed as a “social conservative issue”.
It’s a basic Freedom issue, people! Wake up!

Deliberately manufacturing...
Deliberately undermining...
Ignoring the illegal practices...
Refusing to manufacture...Anyone else smell the athoritarianism here? It's the trait that most distinguishes the liberal from the conservative.
He should move to Italy and try his hand at fascism there.

I think it's more a case of the RKBA being "rolled in" with the other social conservative issues on which Rudy scores so poorly. It certainly is a freedom issue, and even the southern and rural Democrats get that. The core of the anti-gun crowd is the urban liberals (not exclusively Democrat, as evidenced by Rudy).
