NATO's mutual defense pact mandates defending member states which are attacked. The whole concept of NATO since it's inception was geared toward defensive measures against attacks from Russia, and or its Evil Empire cohorts.

Below is the evolution of NATO members up to 2004:

In light of the Kremlin's orchestrated aggression in the northern Baltic's, a uniformed, NATO, nuclear protective missile shield is more then required from Estonia to Bulgaria, in order to hopefully prevent, plus guarantee a swift NATO response to any future full scale Russian land invasions or nuclear attacks directed at 'former' Moscow controlled, now free, Eastern European nations.

EU Rebukes Russia Over Attacks on Ambassadors

The Swedish ambassador, Johan Moldander, was also attacked on Wednesday as he was leaving the Estonian embassy in Moscow -- (Nashi)youths kicked his car and tore the Swedish flag off it. In Stockholm, the Swedish Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador, telling him the incident had been a "flagrant and unacceptable violation against the Vienna Convention," on diplomatic relations.
