WELLINGTON, New Zealand — This is a dog story.

It's about a plucky little Jack Russell terrier named George, who stood like a giant against two marauding pit bulls and gave his own life to save five kids from the steel-trap jaws and razor-sharp teeth of the vicious attack machines.

I just adopted a darling Jack Russell terrier. Thankfully, I named him Hero (instead of Montrose, where I found/rescued him). BTW, he too IS that plucky. He really needs to stop barking at and challenging dogs three times his size. Yes, I hired a trainer to teach him to temper that behavior just a wee bit. : ) To date, he has been marvelous and so very sweet.

All tTerriers, by the nature of their breeding, are fearless warriors...but before we start blaming all pitbulls lets remember that they are terriers too and have also paid the supreme sacrifice time and again for their human companions.

Jack Russells, the pit bull in a terrier body.

And there’s more truth to that most know.

The owner(s) of the rabid pitbulls should be killed.

WOW! This is both heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time.

Good riddance to the pit bulls, and hopefully to their owners/trainers as well if it is found that these monsters were drugged.

Imparting human motives to animals is fun, but this behavior is bred into most terriers and some other dogs, such as dachshunds.

My beagle stays behind me if I’m going down the hall to check a noise at night. I call him a coward, but it’s just his breeding.

trained the pit bulls to kill and may have fed the animals methamphetamines

Lovely. If so, I hope they rot in prison.

U don't know about killed, but they certainly are more guilty than their dogs!

If they keep that up, the dogs will lose all their teeth and become harmless.

I heard Paul Harvey talk about this on his program this morning. Big lump in my throat for the Terrier. If there are paw prints on the path to the Pearly Gates, this dog is surely making them.

Understood. It’s just the thought of a tiny dog (David) taking on two bigger dogs (Goliath) to protect and save his friends, the five children that is so touching. BTW, sadly, Frasier’s dog Eddie (another Jack Russell) died - this is a good description of my (and most likely many dogs). Hero hasn't run off and he has not killed a neighbors cat, yet. He loves chasing bunnies of which there are many in my neighborhood.

“His trainer, Mathilde Halberg, told America’s People magazine: “He was 16-and-a-half years old, and he just had an incredible charisma and was such a free spirit. I saved him from the dog pound. His owners called me as a last resort. He was extremely mischievous, always escaping, chewing up things and running off. Once he killed a neighbour’s cat and chased some horses, that was him.”

As the 13-year owner of a JRT, I salute George. I'm also glad that later in the article the police chief notes that pit bulls' aggressivenesswas the fault of the owners. I hate seeing breeds demonized.

________

If your beagle is like mine, it stays behind unless it is determined that whatever is making the noise is edible.
