California Highway Patrol investigators are looking into whether a vehicle fire in the Macarthur Maze just before midnight Saturday was in any way connected to the disastrous gasoline tanker wreck that happened at the same spot just four hours later, destroying part of the interchange.
The tanker truck crashed at 3:41 a.m. Sunday on the raised, two-lane connector from westbound Interstate 80 to southbound Interstate 880. Authorities have said the driver, who appears to have been moving at an unsafe speed in a 50 mph zone, hit the right guard rail, causing his fully loaded truck to overturn and burst into flames.
According to the Oakland Fire Department, a single engine was dispatched to a vehicle fire on the same connector at 11:41 p.m. Saturday night.
The car was fully engulfed in flames when the engine arrived, said fire Capt. Melinda Drayton. She said the scene was cleared at 12:07 a.m. Sunday. She said she did not know exactly where the earlier fire occurred.
Les Bishop, a California Highway Patrol spokesman, said investigators have "taken that information and are checking into it and making it part of the investigation."
"We're not ignoring that information," Bishop said. He would not comment further.
Several motorists have contacted The Chronicle describing the earlier fire. Some said it led to the temporary closure of the connector.

"It looked like there was oil or gas dripping from the engine," Mitchell said. "As I passed it, I came across a thick black cloud of smoke. ... I slammed on my brakes; then I got worried that if there was a car behind me they wouldn't be able to see, so I let off my brakes and slowly rolled through, and in a second or two I was out of (the smoke)."

All of the 911 “Real Truth” people should note that, yes, a fuel fire can melt steel and cause a concrete and steel structure to collapse.
Driver’s company’s insurer might have a glimmer (small) of hope with this news.
Everyone knows that Bush and the Jooos planned 911. Who needs facts?
Hazmat endorsements now require FBI background checks, although this guy could be one of the drivers not yet contacted for renewal.
Many fuel haulers pay by the load, which is why tankers are often driven very fast.
The freaking explosion didn’t help either.
OMG! You are soooo right! I didn’t even think about it that way./sarc
Get real, these trucks are mostly traveling at those times (4am) to avoid those same 220,000 commuters.
I don’t know how often you are awake at that time, but I can tell you from my experience, that you might see 10 cars an hour at 4 in the morning.
As far as the charges go, ok he had a rap sheet. 10 years ago. He had obviously made some changes otherwise that rap sheet would list more current events. If his criminal activity was more current it would effectively cut him off from driving a big rig. An applicant has to have a clean record for 5 years.
it will warp it enough that you can a hell of a time getting it to lineup right by noon.
“The freaking explosion didnt help either.”
In either this case, or in the World Trade Towers case...
