How about Ken Blackwell for VP. Just a suggestion.

“What was it that kept people from believing he couldn’t be a serious Presidential candidate?”

I didn’t know who Hunter was, except for seeing his name mentioned here on FR, and then I saw him on TV. I think he doesn’t have “presence”, something Thompson is overflowing with and silly as it sounds I think we need in our President.

“Cheney has an extremely impressive resume. Hunter does not. He’s not a bad guy, he’s just is not ready to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency.
And Newt is toxic. Rightly of wrongly, he’s the poster boy for a certain negative attitude many people have about the GOP.”

both Hunter and Gingrich would bring votes to a Thompson campaign that wouldn’t necessarily fall to the former Senator in my opinion.

I’m not ‘advocating’ here, just noting any of the three I listed would bring votes.

I was under the same general impression about Hunter you seem to hold, about a year ago. I’ve since paid attention to his voting record, and his on record statements.

He’d do just fine.

When you remember just how rare it is for a VP too take over the Presidency...you don’t get too caught up in the ‘heartbeat away’ drama queen stuff.

Just my opinion.

Maryland politics are an odd mix.

OT- but for more on what Steele’s campaign faced:

I would LOVE DeLay, but Soros slandered him so successfully I don’t know if that would be productive.

That's not silly. It's very important!

I spent 30 years in marketing, understanding the public’s buying motivations, selling them stuff they don’t need. An expert, if you please. Celebrity is powerful.

Reagan won me over when I was a simple loyal Democrat, back when he was doing the GE minutes on radio. Thompson’s stand-in Paul Harvey slots sounded much like those clarion Reagan papers.

Thompson has all the advantages of Reagan that even Reagan fans were hesitant to admit. Star power. Ease with the camera. Celebrity. Gravitas.

Yes, I know Americans, I have to in order to work in my industry. I calmly told friends that Arnold was a shoe-in here in CA for reasons I saw as obvious. Fred Thompson can walk away with it, and he’s not acting desperate for the office. He would be a formidable opponent if he wasn’t conservative. Let’s thank God that he is a genuine conservative we can get behind... because believe me, if he runs, he wins.

Don’t get me wrong, I would never vote for Rudy as President. (I might hold my nose and vote if he was against Hillary or Obama, but I’d probably just stay home.)

But the VP slot has only the power delegated to it by the President.

As a pragmatist, I recognize that Rudy would be harmless there and would likely alientante fewer people than it would bring in.

If Hunter only needs grooming, he could be great. There is no better training process than 8 years as VP.

Lots of people here like to speculate on the veep, but I never have. But since you ask, I’d drool at the idea of a Thompson/Bolton ticket. I love how unhinged Libs become at the mere mention of Cheney’s name. Just imagine how they would react to VP Bolton.

Yes, I think DeLay is in the Gingrich zone. Why is it the Democrats can’t be slandered? They seem to improve their stature by committing crimes and wear it as a badge of honor.

Former senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee, who is actively weighing a campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, revealed yesterday that he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 2 1/2 years ago but said the cancer is in remission.

Thompson, who is perhaps best known as the tough prosecutor on NBC's "Law & Order," said that he has had no ill effects from the cancer and that it should have no impact on his life expectancy. His doctor said Thompson had been treated with medication but, because the cancer is in remission, is no longer receiving treatment.

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson appeared on Fox News Wednesday morning and revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer more than 2 years ago. (Fox News Channel)

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms," Thompson, 64, said in a posting on the Web site Redstate. "My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future -- and with no debilitating side effects."

Great post.

I spent about three weeks terribly impatient for Fred to announce. But the more that comes out, especially the Deaver support, gives me great comfort that Fred’s already made the decision to run and will pick the best time to announce.

President Thompson. Get used to it, Rootybots.

Remission 3 years. “Lordotic” (mildest form) Caught in Stage 1a. Aggressively treated.

Prognosis: normal life expectancy, no symptoms.

I’d be more worried about McCain’s spot on his head.

Why don’t you like to speculate? You think it’s more the candidate's choice than the party?
