When people talk about doing something about guns in America, one of the points that comes to the fore is, "How could America disarm even if it wanted to? There are so many guns out there." Today I want to address the question of "how" -- if we decided to. Since I have little or no power to influence the "if" part of the issue, I will stick with "how."
Now, how would one disarm the American population? First of all, federal or state laws would need to make it a crime punishable by a $1,000 fine and one year in prison per weapon to possess a firearm. The population would then be given three months to turn in their guns, without penalty.
The disarmament process would begin after the initial three-month amnesty. Special squads of police would be formed and trained to carry out the work. Then, on a random basis to permit no advance warning, city blocks and stretches of suburban and rural areas would be cordoned off and searches carried out in every business, dwelling and empty building. Thoroughness would be at the level of the sort of search that is carried out in Crime Scene Investigations. All firearms would be seized. The owners of weapons found in the searches would be prosecuted: $1,000 and one year in prison for each firearm.
Clearly, since such sweeps could not take place all across a city, county, state or the country at the same time, guns would move. But fairly quickly there would begin to be gun-swept, gun-free areas where there should be no firearms. If there were, those carrying them would be subject to quick confiscation and prosecution. On the streets it would be a question of stopping and searching anyone, even Grandma with her walker.

Ambassador Dan Simpson is the foreign affairs associate editor and a member of the Editorial Board at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Prior to working at the Post-Gazette, he was a career diplomat who worked for every American administration from Lyndon Johnson through George W. Bush. He has served as U.S. Ambassador to several African nations including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and Somalia. Mr. Simpson has also served as served as vice president of the National Defense University in Washington, DC, and as the Deputy Commandant for International Affairs of the U.S. Army War College.
Is this real?
I just assumed this was some letter to the editor by a deranged reader off his meds.
One more reason to steer clear of Pittsburgh.
Scary, but not surprising.
All I do know is that if this were to begin, the streets would run red with blood.
Not everyone in America would act like sheeple.
It would be a sad, sad day.
This guy is nuts, pure and simple.
why don’t people like this go live in england???
the sad thing is this traitor sincerely thinks he’s an American......good luck!!!
Unfortunately, that may not be perceived as the case.
After Katrina, there was widespread door-to-door confiscation. While perhaps not all news was reported, the exercise - so long as it went on - was pretty successful. While the confiscation was stopped in about a day, indications are the cessation occurred because behind the scenes there was widespread intense debate (as in: "stop it, or we're leaving") among police.
It has been tried recently. Would-be tyrants, such as the author in question, did not see any instances of "FMCDH". They like what they saw, and figure maybe the time to really try is approaching.
I'd expect it in 2010.
Don’t worry about this self-righteous kookburger Dan Simpson (”that’s AMBASSADOR Simpson to you!!”).
Just email the Toledo Blade with your reasoned concerns.
Look at his file photo: `wildeyed’ is a mild characterization.
Simpson’s `modest proposal’ is so outrageous that tactically savvy lefties (who want exactly the same thing) will soon be denouncing him as a `Rove plant’.
“IF” is the wrong premise to begin with. Where does this loon think he’s living? New Orleans?
Because they did. One word: Katrina.
Does this guy know that a law like this would show exactly why the 2nd Amendment was put in the Bill of Rights in the first place.
Wait... does this come before or after the author’s fantasy where everyone gets together to burn copies of the Constitution in a bonfire with Königgrätzer Marsch blaring in the background?
They also forget that the locals know who and where the gun grabbers are. We know where their families are. If they are having trouble disarming Iraq, I think they would have more here.
I made the statement about knowing who the gungrabers were and where their families live when Klintoon was prez and a Freeper said "That wasn't very nice to say". If you come after me and mine, it won't be free for you. A few free militia trials and executions for treason and I think they will lose their desire for my guns. Most police and chiefs in Texas don't fear the citizens with guns. I think there will be more people than they realize that took their oath of office seriously about defending the Constitution. My guess is the country would come apart at the seams and it would end in a few days when the folly of their actions were realized. If not, we will just eliminate the Dems and get the country back.
This is the ULTIMATE reason for the 2nd Amendment in the first place. The founders didn't mention hunters, or even home invaders, but they realized a armed citizenry would never allow the country to be overturned by tyrants. ALL of our freedoms come from the 2nd Amendment. Without the right to protect ourselves, we have NO freedom. If somehow they convinced enough people to volunteer to give up their guns, then maybe it would be possible. Just think about Australia or Briton right now. They all feel comfy without any protection, but sooner or later the EU or the government will do something they won't like. They have NO recourse. The military would have to have a coup to stop it. What are the odds?
Except the liberals will do exactly what the Nazis did, rely on your neighbor to turn you in. Or your children. Or your doctor. You get the picture.
The nazis didn’t have to search every single residence or farm, they concentrated their efforts based on the information they were given.
The gunbanners won’t have to search everything either. There are plenty of people out there who will turn you in.
And the Congress passed a law which Bush signed to stop this from happening again, we’ll see. To Mr. Simpson, you are not getting our guns. Period. End of story.
