WSJ also proposes Stanley Fischer for World Bank
Haaretz ^ | 29 April 2007 | TheMarker

As Paul Wolfowitz battles to keep his position as president of the World Bank after a nepotism scandal, speculation mounts that the U.S. may lose its hegemony over appointing the poverty-fighting institution's leader. More - that perhaps it should stop appointing Americans.

The Wall Street Journal became the second publication of repute to suggest Stanley Fischer for the position. His isn't the first name the paper suggests, but it makes a case that he's unique, in being a non-American born American that the member coutries of the World Bank might find "less divisive".

The first was the London-based weekly The Economist, which pointed out that Fischer has the international standing and experience for the job, partly because he's already held high positions at the World Bank and at the International Monetary Fund.

The Wall Street Journal suggests several American candidates, and - Zambia-born Fischer, who currently is none other than the governor of the Bank of Israel.

If this is true, then apparently the WSJ has given up all hope for saving Wolfowitz. Just as I had forecast, their ridiculously emotionalistic and overly technical defenses of the guy, focused primarily on attacking the motives of the accusers, obscured the real problems that the Bank board was seeing. Wolfie's Journal pals' rabid defense of him strongly resembled their overdone whitewater ravings, which also led to no victory. When will they ever learn?

Stan Fischer, despite his propensity to say weird things, is usually a good guy and knows that crowd very well, he might be a better match for the job. Wolfie can lead a think tank or better still, join Bono on something.

I respectfully disagree. It is NOT a good idea to allow the Euros to mount a coup and take control of the World Bank.

They are doing so partly as a power move, and partly because they want the World Bank to be more politically correct. Instead of aiding poorer nations, they want to abort their children and do the warm & fuzzy global warming act, which will help destroy everyone’s economy.

Wolfowitz’s girlfriend is merely a bogus excuse for a power grab. Frankly, I’d rather see the World Bank abolished than to see it join the UN and all the other international institutions that are helping to make the world a worse place for humanity.

We don’t need yet another institution pushing family planning and forced abortions on the world.

I agree with you that I don’t want to the Euros take over. They are obsessed with the abortion-pushing thing, which I have learned is quite a scary and fanatical obsession. I’d also like to see all the other ethical violations cleaned up at that bank, it should result in the wholesale firing of the lot of them. What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the leftist gander.

Bull's-eye!

You hand the left a pen knife and they will carve out your jugular veins.

When is the right ever going to learn that they don't play by the same rules as the rest of us?

Wolfowitz was a marked man from the day he was appointed to this position.

Yeah, to me, the dream guy is Bolton.

Not a chance. But one can always dream.

If Bush told them that replacement for Wolfowitz is going to be John Bolton, they’d lose an appetite for this travesty immediately.
