Tanker truck explosion caused part of the upperdeck of the maze approaching the Bay Bridge to collapse.
Watch live coverage starting at 7 a.m. on NBC11
What was initially reported to the California Highway Patrol as a fire at around 3:42 a.m. Sunday quickly escalated to an explosion and roadway collapse on roadway that connects eastbound Interstate Highway 80 to eastbound Interstate Highway 580, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

According to the dispatcher, the roadway was destroyed after a tanker caught on fire and exploded, causing the driver to suffer second degree burns.
The tanker was under the overpass.
Chopper11 showed at least two sections of the maze collapsed.
The dispatcher said there is no word on when the roadway will be open and it could be days if not months before traffic resumes as usual on this stretch of road.

Oh, right....they ususally blow themselves up TOTALLY!~
Here’s a peculiarity about that interchange.
(The following is according to Google Earth.)
If you’re in Oakland westbound on 580, there’s no way to get southbound on 880.
Meaning, obviously, staying on the Interstate and not having to get off onto city streets.
“Looks like BART better add a few more trains to their schedule.”
They have already started to ... amazing!
The running food fight is the most entertaining part of the thread.
Better yet they tore down the Embarcadero freeway a few years back.
It’s going to be a nightmare for commuters.
That looks an awful lot like a CONTROLLED DEMOLITION to me. I’m gonna rig up a rabbit cage and a slab of concrete in my back yard to prove it.
Sparky.
It's a story from a local TV station. Not everyone writes for a national audience. Most local broadcasters and newspapers don't give a state for local towns and landmarks.
Thank you!
That's called a dateline. A dateline reflects where the reporter is, not where the story is -- and if the story isn't based on on-the-scene news gathering, many news outlets don't use datelines at all. Almost no local news outlets use the state in datelines in the local area.
If this story was written by someone in a newsroom in San Francisco, based on phone interviews, wire reports, listening to the police scanner and so on, an Oakland dateline would, in effect, be a lie.
Too late. Halliburton has already been to all the local new outlets and removed the video of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Condolezza Rice personally setting the "cutter charges".

Perhaps RWA summed it up best [at post 104]:
Maybe the cab driver was a friend who was waiting nearby.
Either that or a critical juncture on a major thoroughfare fell victim to a 4 AM manifestation of Murphy's Law while the lucky truck driver hailed a convenient cab.
LOL, at least you could have the courtesy to ping the perp. ;-)
I don't ping Laz, he's scary...
My non political wife said that Gas Prices would shoot up when this happened.
It will be interesting to see if this happens. She was thinking about increased insurance costs across the board for gas tankers and the oil companies.
The enemy is here already way before the Presidents Mexican truck agreement. Militant Islam does not need Mexico to get to us.
