Tanker truck explosion caused part of the upperdeck of the maze approaching the Bay Bridge to collapse.
Watch live coverage starting at 7 a.m. on NBC11
What was initially reported to the California Highway Patrol as a fire at around 3:42 a.m. Sunday quickly escalated to an explosion and roadway collapse on roadway that connects eastbound Interstate Highway 80 to eastbound Interstate Highway 580, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

According to the dispatcher, the roadway was destroyed after a tanker caught on fire and exploded, causing the driver to suffer second degree burns.
The tanker was under the overpass.
Chopper11 showed at least two sections of the maze collapsed.
The dispatcher said there is no word on when the roadway will be open and it could be days if not months before traffic resumes as usual on this stretch of road.

Hey, you left out Ditter.
Flaming wreckage ping

“Actually I would guess this might be a licensing scandal, a unqualified driver rather than terrorism.”
You could be right on that...I’d still like to wait and see what details emerge on this incident. Seems a bit odd to me.
You just expect us to automatically know what PART of the lake you are going to walk to? Geeze.
My sons will be Grandparents before the new Bay Bridge gets finished. Their kids are 6 and 8 years old.
I believe that it took between 4 & 6 years to get the freeways abd ramps taken care of after the LP quake. It was a major journey to get to the Oakland Airport or SFO from the EBay or N Bay. The smart airlines started adding flights from Sac and San Jose.
It was so bad, that I told relatives and friends who flew out. If they landed at Oakland or SFO, instead of Sacramento, they had to rent a car or take limos to and from the airport to our house. A couple of these dear ones thought I was a real bastard until they rented cars and spent more time getting from these airports to our home than their cross country flights.
This will cause fubar at all bridges into Gay Frisco from Monday until the ramps are fixed or destroyed and rebuilt.
The last major earthquake had a terrible impact on the Bay area economy due to these delays in repairing the roads, freeways, ramps and bridges.
I suspect a good mohammedan would have been cooked rather than walk away. However, just like the OU bomber, someone else may have pressed the trigger.
Gonna change your handle to Great-Grampa Dave? I’m in Vallejo and commute to Sonoma so this won’t affect me at all. Where are you located?
I blame Israel.
That only took em 8-9 years to rebuild(under 3 miles of work), hopefully Caltrans can get on this a little snappier.
I believe that the “Bitching Room” is over here

They can claw each other’s eyes out in that room.
Much better; there was no explosion or the driver would have been halfway to Sausalito when they found him.
Well, seeing as how I was watching it (the attack on the WTC) live on tv there was no confusion.

Although we see it almost daily, that they can’t. I havr interviewed (so called) drivers that can’t read a box of ceral. Usually, they get their CDL’s from a “Professional” driving school.
:O)

You people should see the ninnies on the local SF tv stations trying to explain what’s going on and how to get around. When they’re not getting their talking points from the NY Times or the DNC they don’t know what to say.
