Why Giuliani is Leading in the Early Republican Presidential Primary Polls

"When was the last time Republicans nominated a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights Northeasterner with an iffy record on taxes and spending?" asked Nelson Warfield, an aide to Bob Dole's failed 1996 Republican presidential campaign. "That's the hurdle (Giuliani) faces." Yet Rudy leads in all advance polling. Rudy Giuliani has advocated restriction of the right of a citizen to bear arms. In order to explain and confront any opposition on the right, Rudy has courted Sean Hannity, a conservative talk show host. The courteous treatment of Mr. Giuliani by Mr. Hannity cannot be underestimated, Sean is usually a scrapper, yet he gives "America's Mayor" respect. ...

This is the primary reason why Giuliani leads the polls, that plus his name familiarity.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

His popularity is already beginning to drop as his policy positions become known and he will continue to drop in the polls as he is "discovered."

July, 2000 - “In the contest for Pennsylvania’s 23 electoral votes, Republican George W. Bush
currently holds a narrow advantage over Democrat Al Gore, 44% to 40%.”

September, 2000 - “Mr. Bush now leads Mr. Gore 48 percent to 42 percent, according to a poll the Los Angeles Times released yesterday. In the nightly CNN-Gallup-USA Today tracking poll conducted Sept. 23 to Sept. 25, the Texas governor leads 46 percent to 44 percent.”

It is intersting to finally get to the last couple of paragraphs of the article...
[notice in particular the source info at the end]
- - -
“Billionaire Steve Forbes (and one time Presidential Candidate)
is a stalwart conservative,
and he opposes Giuliani on abortion, guns, and gays,
but he has endorsed Rudy early,
and that means money.
Why did Steve Forbes endorse Rudy Giuliani for president
at the NASDAQ stock exchange in New York?
...he summed it up when he told reporters:
‘He is the man who can lead America
in a world that is uncertain, fight
the forces of evil and at the same
time increase economic opportunity
here at home.’
...to Forbes, the global stakes are high - the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran
and radical Islam, finishing the job successfully in Iraq,
the rise of a threatening regime in Moscow, the China challenge,
and expanding economic opportunity and prosperity...
The bottom line is that Rudy has the leadership skills and the charisma of a winner,
and Republicans want a winner.

not just a winner but someone who understands there is only one question in this election .... “which candidate will best keep me and my family safe from the people that want to destroy us?”

It utterly galls me how the “we need to be taught a lesson” crowd will allow unimaginable harm to be done to this country, by helping put the scummiest bunch of moonbats and traitors in power, and yet they are so strident in screaming from the rooftops how the country will be destroyed if Guiliani gets elected.

Just because Rudy was in office in the City that got hit, and said nice things on TV after the attack does not qualify him over any other candidate.

>>“which candidate will best keep me and my family safe from the people that want to destroy us?”

Is Guiliani the most electable in the final election? Or would the GOP nominate someone more true to their principles
but a weaker candidate. (In which case, Mrs. Clinton raises
her right hand to take the oath of office—unless it’s
Obama— on 1/20/09. And the terrorists celebrate...)

If Rudy had been a democrat mayor, and did/said all the same stuff after 9-11, would you be supporting him?

Sure. I can see sacrificing certain conservative pet issues in order to support national security.

But what’s wrong with the conservative Republican candidates’ qualifications on National Security? It’s not like Rudy is Rumsfeld, and the rest are morons.

Thank you for your post. He is indeed a winner, and he definitely understands the seriousness of the terror threat. If terror is not the number one issue, there will be no others.
