Presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani has made a sharp departure from his previously stated stance on civil unions and has spoken out in opposition to a civil union law passed by the New Hampshire state Senate.
"Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said Thursday in a written response to a question from the New York Sun.
"In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."
The New Hampshire law is titled, "An act permitting same gender couples to enter civil unions and have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as married couples."
Previously Giuliani had made no secret of his support for civil unions. In February 2004, he told Fox News Bill O'Reilly, when asked if he supported gay marriage, "I'm in favor of . . . civil unions."
And in 1998, then-New York City Mayor Giuliani signed into law a domestic partnership bill that a gay rights group, the Empire State Pride Agenda, praised as setting "a new national benchmark for domestic partner recognition."
Regarding Giulianis change of position, the Sun observed: "Despite Mr. Giuliani's long history of supporting gay rights or rather, because of it yesterday's statement is likely to lead many to question whether the former mayor is concerned that his socially liberal record and positions aren't flying in the Republican primary. While he still holds a commanding lead in the national polls, he has taken a hit over the last month or so after reiterating his support for the public funding of abortion.
Among other leading presidential candidates, Mitt Romney opposes the New Hampshire measure; Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards support it; and John McCain has taken no position, saying the civil unions issue is a matter of states rights.
Domestic partnerships are gay marriages.
Howard Koeppel, one of the openly gay men Giuliani lived with during the
unraveling of his second marriage, said: He [Giuliani] did tell us that if they
ever legalized gay marriages, we would be the first one he would do.

"Let us pray RINOS------cause you can bet your
sweet bippie I'm going nowhere without conservatives."
Domestic partnerships that are totally separate from heterosexual marriage make sense.
Gay marriage “makes sense”?

MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS MONTH OF JUNE LESBIAN AND GAY PRIDE AND HISTORY MONTH; Hosts Gracie Mansion Reception in Honor of New York City's Lesbian and Gay Community
=======================================================
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today hosted a reception at Gracie Mansion in honor of New York City's diverse lesbian and gay community and proclaimed June Lesbian and Gay Pride and History Month. "It would be impossible to imagine modern New York without the enormous contributions gays and lesbians have made to every aspect of life in our City," the Mayor said. "New York would not be the Capital of the World -- the top city for business, technology, academia, fashion, theater, the culinary arts, the visual arts and a whole range of other human pursuits -- without the presence of our gay and lesbian community. The talent and energy of this community will be an essential element of our City's continued growth."
The Mayor also presented a Certificate of Recognition to the Gay Men's Chorus, which performed at the reception. The Gay Men's Chorus is celebrating their 21st Anniversary. The New York City Gay Men's Chorus was established in 1979 by former San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus member Edward Dryer Weaver.
The group rehearsed at Washington Square United Methodist Church, and gave its formal debut in the Great Hall of Cooper Union on December 19, 1980.
The 32nd Lesbian and Gay Pride March will take place on Sunday, June 24, 2001 in Manhattan. The theme of this year's celebration is: "What part of equal don't you understand?" The parade steps off at Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street and follows six gigantic rainbow balloon arches down Fifth Avenue.

Rudy opposes gay nups ban
By James Gordon Meek, Daily News Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - Rudy Giuliani came out yesterday against President Bush’s call for a ban on gay marriage.
Domestic partnerships that are not marriage make sense.
Like ice that is not cold makes sense.
Domestic partnerships ARE gay marriage.
“After the 1979 death of Harvey Milk in San Francisco, gay rights activist Tom Brougham came up with a definition of domestic partnership that is now universally used, and was designed to include everything about marriage except sexual orientation.”

Even more of a reason not for for this RINO.
He is just NOW figuring out he has to move right politically to win a primary in a conservative party ?
That speaks of complete arrogance or stupidity.
....and Rooty isn't stupid
Fixed = Even more of a reason not to vote for this RINO.
Rooty looks at his poll numbers, then changes his position or issues a retraction of a previous position......whatever is necessary to pump the numbers. Rooty's campaign strategy in a nutshell:
" I was against (for) it before. I'm for (against) it now. I'll change my position later."
"I forgot. My wife forgot."
"Nobody's perfect. I made a mistake, everybody makes mistakes. "
"Whatever you said I did, I'm sorry I did it."
"I told the truth when I said I lied."
"Not to worry America---my wife will sit in on Cabinet meetings."
"Not to worry America---my wife will not sit in on Cabinet meetings."
He’s pandering...I don’t understand why he hasn’t jumped ship and switch to the Dems...He could pull a lot more votes as a Dem and prob get the WH....
I don’t agree. Partnership agreements between consenting adults is reasonable. Marriage is something different.
Don't be ridiculous. There is absolutely no comparison.
