The pitbull was bred specifically to fight and KILL. The statistics behind the pitbull related fatalities are damning.

My teenage daughter is home with my younger kids every afternoon for 90 minutes until I get home from work.

Do you keep a dog who has killed a cat and attacked another dog in your house while you are out?

Pit bull type dogs are terriers and terriers were created to be killers of one thing or another. I’ve worked with dogs all of my life and I’m always extra careful around any terrier breed. Pit bull type dogs just happen to be very large powerful terriers. I have met some wonderful one’s over the years, but unless a persons circumstances in life can handle such a dog I really wish people would choose another breed. Too much dog for most.

That said, I have no idea how the gov could go about banning them... Would a dog be banned because it “looked” like a pit breed? How mixed would it have to be to be passed over in the ban? What about the Am staffs/Staff bulls etc... being shown under AKC? A lot of questions... It’s a shame all people can’t just be responsible dog owners. I want to slap the silly fools who get a dog like that so they can look like “tough guys”, then tragedy occurs... :(

Before pit bulls it was Akitas. Before were the German sheperds. Before were rotweillers, before bull dogs. And on and on it goes.

Pit bulls have been bred in the good ol' USA way before any of us were born yet only recently have they been causing trouble, and even the level of "trouble" is relative. Compared to swimming pools in the number of children killed per year, pit bulls are meek angels. Should we ban that too?

Once again, statist emotionalism trumps common sense freedom. You think the nanny-staters will stop at the "devil pit bull dogs?" Puh-lease. First it's pit bulls, trans fat, and cigarettes. Next thing you know they'll come for our guns and gas guzzling, "energy inefficient" cars. You know, "for the children"?

And we wonder why we are losing in the arena of ideas. Emotion trumps logic, always. Witness the massive caterwauling, on FR of all places, on any myriad of issues to day. Borders, WoT, 08 candidates, you name it.

It's way past time we stop fallign for cheap emotion and actually engage an issue logically. We don't want to become liberals, do we?

No, and as I said, I don’t defend them for that.

My oldest brother had a black lab that he loved dearly. Then one day it snapped at his daughter. It was put down the same day.

I see they are already attacking you for “appeasing” the “killer hounds from Hades!!!1!1!11!1!!eleventy!1” Thank you for injecting much needed logic.

It never fails to surprise me how all around intelligent people can fall victim to such cheap emotional baloney.

A fairer solution would be to treat the owner of a pit bull, in law, as if he personally committed any violent act the pit bull committed.

The problem with this is that it's hard to convict if there isn't criminal intent. It would be hard to argue that merely owning a pit bull constitutes criminal intent unless the breed was illegal to own.

I think a good solution would be to require that all pit bulls be neutered before transfer or sale & outlaw commercial breeding of the dog. The breed would disappear naturally.

Nope. My dogs would lick you to death, that is about it. I can’t say it enough. Boxers!!!!! It’s all about the Boxers!!

But then again, my dogs were babies when my kids were babies so they tolerate everything.

You misrepresent, or misunderstood my comment.

Ask your vet if there is a ‘vicious breed’.

Or don’t. I did, twice with different vets, got the same answer.

There isn’t one.

The same way they do ‘guns in the home’ btw. EXACTLY THE SAME.

A gun doesn't have a mind of its own.

“But when a pit bull does what that breed usually does, there has to be another explanation?”

Consider this, in light of the total number of pit bulls nationally. Note the listing up above on the thread of fatal ‘dog bites’ over the past several decades.

btw, I don’t own a pit bull. I own a lab and a Rott/GShepard mix breed.

There is no such thing as a ‘vicious’ breed of dog. Ask your vet.

“Then I suggest you that are posting ‘ban the breed’ to review the list of dogs that lead in ‘biting’.

If you modify that list to ‘dogs that lead in FATAL biting’, be my guest.”

Thats already been done on this thread.

Again, just ask your vet if there is a ‘vicious breed’.

He or she will tell you catagorically the answer is “No”.

This is totally MSM driven.

“I think a good solution would be to require that all pit bulls be neutered before transfer or sale & outlaw commercial breeding of the dog. The breed would disappear naturally.”

That’s a tough one though... There are several varieties of “pit” type dogs. Which one’s, and how mixed, to require mandatory altering? And what about the Corso’s (talk about a scary breed!) and the many other bull/pit type dogs? Would they fall into the same category? I’m all for taking large dangerous animals out of the hands of the irresponsible, but how are we going to ban a “breed” that is composed of so many breeds? It’s not a realistic solution IMHO.

no one is suggesting that you are a bad mother for leaving a teenager in charge of youngers for a small length of time. but if you kept a pitbull locked in a bathroom and told the kids not to open the door, you should be held criminally responsible for whatever happens from that point on.

Those parents made a decision to HAVE a pitbull AND to expect children would know how to keep it locked up. It resulted in the death of their child. They should serve 10 years each. Neglegent homicide.

“The pitbull was bred specifically to fight and KILL.”

I’ve never heard that one.

” The statistics behind the pitbull related fatalities are damning.”

Nope. Measure the number of pitbull related fatalities to the total population of the breed...then factor in some disgusting humans train them for fighting other dogs in very cruel ways.

Those that survive the ‘fight circuit’ such as it is end up with owners - many unknowing the dog and handlers past - and those dogs kill or maim.

Just ask your vet. I know I’m right about this. There is no such thing as a ‘vicious’ dog breed.

There are vicious humans.

I lost my house insurance because I had a german shepherd. She was the sweetest dog I’ve ever had in my life, a total marshmallow.

I had family visit me with a bunch of toddlers, they crawled all over her. She kept looking at me with these pathetic eyes, like, “Please get these things off me”. But she never moved. I used to sit and eat nuts with her, one for me, one for you.

She eventually got this German Shepherd thing where she became paralyzed and I had to put her to sleep. I still miss her.

“The same way they do ‘guns in the home’ btw. EXACTLY THE SAME.
A gun doesn’t have a mind of its own.”

Correct. And a pit bull isn’t born with the notion to kill small children at random.

Guns are misused daily, and we gun owners are attacked because of the miscreants.

Pit bulls are misused daily, and we blame the dog?

Whats wrong with that picture?

Ask your Vet.

Thank you for this post! What I’m gonna say isn’t going to be popular on these boards but I’m gonna say it anyway! EVERYONE here knows that when on of these dogs attack and kill, you can bet that it’s owner is either : a) piece of sh#t ghetto garbage, b) gangbanger, c) meth/drug using white trash. I’ve had my purebreed pit for over 8 years (before I got Tiggy, I adopted one from the pound mixbreed) with no problems. But then again I don’t fight my dogs, use them to guard my drug lab, or train it to be vicious so I can walk around my ghetto like a badass.
