I read a lengthy, detailed article in the Chicago Tribune the other day detailing what's involved in this bill. Perhaps someone has the article and will link to it.
You have no idea what this bill entails. The cost to the taxpayers will be enormous. Various shades of Islam religionists demand different religious rites and practices to be applied in food and meat preparation from the slaughterhouse and thence inch-by-inch along the route right up to the dining room table. The process is going to be unenforceable. It will cause chaos and enormous additional overhead in the food industry from food factories, slaughterhouses, warehouses, restaurants, supermarkets, the labeling industry, the packaging industry, you name it.
The various Muslim religionists are fighting among themselves already. Each want its own practices observed. There is no single agreed-upon halal.
Don't jump before you're informed, folks. If these kinds of bills are passed in your state you'll pay through the nose in price-raises at the stores and in taxes..
At least the Jewish kosher requirements proceed through the food chain relatively seamlessly, are not onerous, hardly fanatical nor are they a drain on the taxpayers.
Imagine the added inspectors/investigators/enforcers that will be needed to carry out these Obama-type legislative mandates. The enforcement will actually begin on farms and ranches, factories and food processing plants, slaughterhouses and greenhouses, supermarkets and small grocery stores.....all subject to fines and worse if they don't conform to every crazy requirement of "halal".
Not to mention the endless Muslim law suits against non-conforming businesses..........
It's not just a simple matter of labeling. It's just the beginning of the incremental power-creep we're beginning to notice in Islamic strongholds across the fruited plain.

An average person, reading the original post, is going to say, "what's the problem with making sure that the food that is (voluntarily) labeled 'halal' actually meets the definition?" If people are going to use this as a negative on Obama, they need to explain it better.
If marketing halal is economically not sustainable, then don’t market it, or market it at significantly higher prices, add on a cost or fee to the processor to pay for the state regulation/oversight. The processor will pass that on to the consumer, who pays more for what they want.
That’s how the process SHOULD work. I get the idea though that our towel-headed friends think the government should foot the bill.
Aw, what the heck. I’m going home for a ham & cheese for lunch. I don’t need halal.
Exactly.
This is an excellent an informed post. Thank you.
Muslims eat kosher foods. Trust me on this.
