Republican presidential contender John McCain called the Iraq war "a great tragedy" on Thursday, yet still decried a timetable for a US withdrawal as the Senate voted to begin pulling out troops by Oc 1.
"I'm aware of the patience of the American people. I read the polls. I'm not embarrassed to say that. I understand the frustration and sorrow that American people feel about this war. It's a great tragedy," said McCain, who was campaigning in this early voting state and missed the Senate vote on the bill containing the withdrawal timetable.
As the furor grows over the firings of eight federal prosecutors, McCain broke with President Bush, saying that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should leave office.
"His best loyalty to the president would be served by stepping down," McCain said during a morning campaign stop.

Your best loyalty would have been showing up to vote today, John.
Furor? What furor? Nobody outside D.C. cares.
He’s toast, but we already knew that.
Speaking of tragedy, I give you, John McCain. Candidate for POTUS.
Yep, there is no furor. Nobody outside of D.C. and the MSM thinks Bush or Gonzalez did anything wrong.
There that's better
“Everyone believed they had WMD.” Not quite, the inspectors on the ground did not.
Oh what a tangled web we weave ...
That’s a misleading headline. I’m by no means a defender of John McCain, but the headline took what he was saying out of context.
John McCain is this election cycle’s Bob Dole. He has been ordained by the RNC.
As one who is frequently given to calling John’s supporters McCainiacs, I don’t trust this report from AP at ALL! I heard Sen McCain’s speech on the war yesterday, and his forceful statement about what’s at stake, and what we need to do, made me outright PROUD of him. Hell, if he’s the nominee, I will confidently VOTE for him because of the clarity I heard from him as he announced his candidacy.
Assume the Press is lying until you have evidence to the contrary.
Not to be Clintonesque, but his quote doesn't exacly refer to the War itself as a tragedy. Does it?
Why is this guy even considering a run for the presidency?
Your best loyalty would be leaving the planet. Oh, and while your at it take Kennedy, Hillery, Obama, Dean, Edwards, Dodd........ I don't have time to list them all but most of all, include the RINO'S (Make sure Jody Rell gets a seat in the cargo bay.)
I was for it before I was against it. McCain can’t be trusted on anything.
Do you have anything, in any report from the inspectors during the run-up to the war, that says they believed Saddam Hussein didn't have any weapons programs?
Ya mean other than they didn't find any evidence of approaching imminent mushroom clouds?
I didn’t ask you if they found Saddam’s weapons. I asked you to back up your assertion that the inspectors on the ground didn’t believe he ever had them.
We didn’t rush to immediate war for what he used against Iran years ago. The war was justified by assertions of imminent mushroom clouds believed by both parties. Goodbye.
What a load of BS.
