Tribes Chasing Qa'ida Across Anbar Border? (Sattar kicking al-Qaeda's ass across Iraq)
Iraq Slogger ^ | April 26 2007

The Front announced the immanent defeat of al-Qa'ida-related groups in Anbar province, and asked for permission to pursue militants across provincial lines. Recent reports suggest that such clearance may have been granted.

A representative of the Anbar Salvation Front recently called for the Iraqi government to allow them to pursue al-Qa'ida elements into strongholds in neighboring provinces, and asked the Coalition forces for air support for their operations, and for assistance in monitoring lakes, waterways, palm groves, and to eliminate points of infiltration of militant groups into the neighboring areas of Baghdad, Karbala, and Babil provinces, as al-Hayat reported.

The Front’s request to pursue al-Qa'ida fighters into neighboring provinces has apparently been granted, according to a report in the Iraqi daily al-Mada on Tuesday.

Souces in the Anbar Salvation Council have indeed begun to pursue the remnants of armed groups who have fled to the areas surrounding Anbar, entering terrain around Mosul, Tikrit and Diyala, al-Mada reports.

Al-Mada also reported that the tribal forces had captured a key “Islamic State of Iraq” member, writing that the police of the Anbar Salvation Front arrested the “Minister of Finance” for the al-Qaida affiliated “Islamic State of Iraq.”

The Front also seized a large sums of money, which the “minister” had in his possession, al-Mada writes. Along with the “finance minister,” the Front captured twenty suspects in Salah al-Din province, according to the paper’s sources. The arrests, al-Mada writes, took place in the Tharthar area in the Salah al-Din province, next to the Jazira area near Ramadi.

While AFP referred to the tribal fighters as “volunteers” IraqSlogger sources in Falluja reported earlier that the Anbar Salvation forces had begun a program of conscription, requiring each family to enlist at least one of their sons in the forces.

I really wonder why the folks in Pres. Bush’s camp havn’t figured this out yet! Fight fire with fire, kill the enemy, and let the chips fall where they might. Putting the b.s. rules on our fighting men & women only allows the enemy more time to figure out how to hurt our people.

Who do you suppose it was that found oil in Anbar? Probably Halliburton. That will go a long way to settling disputes.

The ROEs in Iraq are more restrictive than the police force in your home city. The Soldiers and Marines literally have to be fired at before they can return fire. If a insurgent is seen planting and IED in middle of road, he cannot be shot, but must be approached. If he runs, he cannot be fired upon. Mosques are utterly off limits. Terrorist shoots a Marine, hits him in SAPI plate, not woundiing the Marine, but knocks him down., The other Marines are not allowed to shoot at him while they watch him run into mosque. Marines surrond mosque in well less than a minute. Platoon leader has to radio for Iraqi police to search mosque. In less than 30 seconds, 6 Iraqi police come out of mosque and say no one is in there. Marines ordered to go back on patrol. How do I know this? My son spent two tours there as Marine grunt in Fallujah and Ramadi. I have personal friends over there now.

The mistake of the US was after disbanding the Iraqi Army not going with an Afghan approach of working with locals groups to establish security.

After disbanding the Iraqi Army and police there really was an almost total security vacuume.

You would be amazed at how fast a large military force not encumbered by moronic ROEs can wipe out insurgent scum.

Amen to that! And a positive development in the Iraqis quest for a peaceful nation free of AQ and Taliban and Saddam.

Getting rid of al-Qaeda in Iraq will at least make a political solution possible.

Creating a pro-American Sunni miltia around 200,000 men strong would go along way to forcing such a solution. Because, if Sadr and Hakim think they can piss on the Sunnis and give them nothing without a very high cost, that is exactly what they will do.

The Sunnis have decades of military experience the Shia are just starting to catch up.

Maybe I’m over optimistic now...
but Sattar could be the Iraqi George Washington,
or at least the Sunni Arab Barzani.

It gets worse. Chopper pilots I know are telling me that they’ve flown missions in support of ground patrols at night when they see thru night vision device groups of armed men running towards the patrol and cannot fire until the men actually open up on the patrol, all according to the rules of engagment.

The only bright side is that these pilots fire a burst or two in front of the pack of men , in violation of the rules and with a blind eye from their immediate command, and it seems to discourage the terrorists’ progress. These pilots do so knowing that they can be brought up on charges by worthless JAGs and investigators. They would rather be prosecuted than let a Soldier or Marine die unnecessarily.

“One thing Sheikh Sattar keeps saying is he wants al-Anbar to be like Germany and Japan and South Korea were after their respective wars, with a long-term American presence helping ... put them back together,” MacFarland said. “The negative example he cites is Vietnam. He says, yeah, so, Vietnam beat the Americans, and what did it get them? You know, 30 years later, they’re still living in poverty.”

Sattar: “The time for dictatorship is gone, and we are welcoming the new dawn of democracy and freedom here. I expect the future to be much better for the next generation for they will live in a better world than we do today.”

Satter sure seems to be on the right track.

A minor point, and I don't expect him to be real accurate on the nuances of what really happened with Viet Nam, but this sentence is somewhat erroneous:

He says, yeah, so, Vietnam beat the Americans, and what did it get them?
We won every battle in Viet Nam, we did not lose one.

Kerry and Fonda (traitors both) beat the Americans. And they are trying to win the War (On Terror) for the enemies at this time also. Along with the traitorous Liberals, in and out of Congress

See this for what the Dems are up to:

Dem war votes target GOP lawmakers

The Headline:

As Democrats push to withdraw troops, they seek to undermine Republicans by creating repeated chances to side with an unpopular president.

Absolutely nucking futs.

We might as well let the Dems and the ACLU run the show. At least they might eventually end up with the blame.

You're being told BS. I'm leaving it at that. ROE in certain instances are a pain and the as$ and should be adjusted. With that said, what you describe above is not at all the norm, nor policy. Not even close.

"Petraeus of Arabia"
A rather interesting analogy. At last. We have some damn serious Iraqi Arab taking up arms against their true enemies.
I do hope the bonds shall grow between these tribes and the US forces, as well as the continued Iraqi military and police in general.
And I think it is fair to give a bit of credit to the Maliki ran government. They could be making it very hard for these tribes to start to contribute as they are.
Barriers may be breaking down between Shia and Sunni political lists to some degree as they all see this a win/win situation.

Post #36. Harry the snake is more worried then he may appear. To many things starting to come together in Iraq for his liking. The demos are going to look like complete fools by the time this is all over. Notice the tones he and the fairy god mother are offering in the past week. Words, like the POTUS should dig deep in his heart. The POTUS should consider working together with the democrats, not be so tough etc..
They realize they walk on thin ice as the Iraqi situation will continue to improve, and there is not a thing they can do to stop it in the reality of things.
Once a threshold point is reached where this POTUS believes AQIR and the Saddamist can no longer alter the equation in Iraq with any effect, he just may asked his PR people to start to appear more cocky. Sort of like he did on the aircraft carrier. The mission was accomplished. We beat the Iraqi army and made it disperse, and Saddam was dethroned.
We won the war. Next step obviously in conjunction with convincing the Iraqi they need a much better balanced unity central government, is to reach the point where the SASO is declared a success.
That phase now appears obtainable in the near future (before 2009 comes along).
AQIR cannot sustained it's great losses for a year or more at this point. And with the constant overtures for more Baathist to be returned to the fold, only the hard core Saddamist and some really whacko Sunni Wahaabist type groups will continue to attempt disrupting progress.
And the Iraqi and US forces are not going to sit still and stop going after them.
