WASHINGTON - The number of laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits fell last week by the sharpest amount in nearly two months, indicating the labor market remains healthy despite the sluggish economy.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for jobless benefits totaled 321,000 last week, a decline of 20,000 from the previous week.
That was the biggest decline in claims in nine weeks and was more than double what economists had been expecting. Analysts said part of the improvement reflected trouble adjusting the weekly claims data around Easter, which does not fall in the same week every year.

What kind of worthless idiots work for the MSM.
My liberal coworker says the reason claims are down is because people have been unemployed for so long that they have used up their unemployment compensation entitlement. Is there any truth to that?
Thank you for the fix.
None, whatsoever.
No, ask him to prove that. See what kind of response you get.
“..despite the sluggish economy”.

True, true, true. If the economy is so sluggish why are their banks sprouting up all over New York City and the outer boroughs? If people don’t have jobs or money why open up banks?
No. The unemployment rate isn't based on the number of claims (either new or continuing) for unemployment benefits. It is based on a survey of businesses and households to see who is not working but actively looking for a job. If you've been without a job for five years but are still looking for a job you still count as unemployed (and also lazy, but the Department of Labor doesn't track that).
Thanks Karl, that good info.
If that was the case then those people would show up as part of the unemployed and the unemployment rate would go up and not be at a low 4.4% as it today.
Maybe the newspapers are just surveying other newspapers. They are getting their view of a major depression because of the tumbleweeds blowing through the press rooms.
If things were really going well, then everyone would be buying three or four copies of the NY Times each day.
(E.g. I have heard many complaints on DICE.com from mainframe programmers in the Northeast.)
Cheers!
It's the economy stupid.
