On the other hand, the state’s rights issue is still a major issue. The rampant Federalism we see today is a direct descendant of that conflict and the methods used to end it. The red state/blue state conflict of today is reminiscent of those times as well.

I had family on both sides of The War, and see the convoluted truth on both sides.

Nicely put. The battle cry of Freedom could legitimately be had by both sides, and could legitimately be scoffed at by the other side. Therein lies the tragedy. And the importance of amnesty and unity going forward, as Lincoln thought.

You mean the centralization of the Federal government. Federalism is what we had before.

One of the biggest centralizers of the time was Lincoln, and the GOP was the Big Government party.

Of course, their idea of Big Government woudl seem appealingly small to us today.

And Lincoln's ideas about Reconstruction were better htan those that Stevens and Sumner imposed.
