Bush defeatism?
Conservative national security officials are wondering what is going wrong inside the Bush White House. The choice of a retired Marine Corps general known for his liberal political views as a candidate for a "czar" over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has many scratching their heads and wondering whether the president is aligning his administration with the defeatists now opposing the war.
The retired Marine in question is Gen. Jack Sheehan, who was asked to be the new coordinator, despite a reputation as a liberal military officer, something uncharacteristic of most Marines. He turned it down, not only in private, but then with an added slap at the president in an opinion article this week in The Washington Post.

Something’s not right in the White House. Seems like everyone has been compromised.

Probably recommended by the same helpful aides who recommended Harriet Miers and Alberto Gonzalez, put Fitz in charge of straightening out CIA leaks, put Schwarzenneger forward in California and Riordan failed to make it, advised keeping George Tenet on at the CIA, and spent campaign funds in support of Arlen Specter and Lincoln Chaffee.
Next step is Harry Reid for Secretary of Defense.
I read Sheehan’s pompous piece in the WaPo and wondered what the heck was going on. I still wonder.

He’s a senior VP at Bechtel International. omg!
Robert Gates. I suspect he is perhaps the primary if not a strong secondary reason behind this would-be nomination. He’s much less aligned with the so-called hawks than most of the early Bush administration personnel.
I wonder who Hitlery would want as Sec. Defense.
If she really wanted to show how tough she is, I would expect her to nominate someone like Sandy Burglar. That'll have the Chi-coms, Putin and Al Qaeda sweating bullets!
May God protect the USA from this evil creature.
IMHO, I believe that the Bush administration now realizes
that they have lost the funding battle for the war in Iraq.
Bush can veto all he wants, but Congress simply can out wait him. Although Bush can move some funding around, when
the money runs out, the troops come out.
Sad to say, Bush has not demonstrated the political savy
or flexibility to turn any adverse situation around. You
have to wonder if there was ever any discussion about a Plan B within his administration. A ship of state without a rudder scenario. Opportunity lost for a secure future for our nation.
We are in deep trouble.
This was back in the days before mindless Bush worship became more important than conservative principles.
Nevertheless, he was pushed through because he was the choice of the Republican Establishment.
The Republicans are doing the same thing again today with Giuliani and McCain, pushing candidates that will be a disaster for the party and the Republic.
Senior VP's from the military are normally chosen not by what they know but who they know.
