Well, they better not shut down the Hotel Hershey.
At least, not until I have a chance to visit the
Chocolate Spa.

Hershey has a plant up the road from here in Oakdale (CA) where they make Hershey Kisses and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.
They employ 800 workers presently and all seem to be concerned about whether this plant will close or not.
The Modesto Bee (McClatchey) is seeking comments from past and current employees regarding possible closure of the local candy plant.
Prior to 9-11, Hershey offered tours of the plant. Fascinating to watch the process involved in the making of Hershey Kisses. The tours were discontinued and haven’t re-started.

These stories make me sick. No more Herseys in my house ever.
Not that they would care.

Hersheys is the crappiest chocolate in the WORLD. It has a grainy unpleasant mouthfeel and does not have a good flavor. Do a taste test with a Hershey bar and a Cadbury. You don’t even NEED to go up against anything Swiss or Belgian. Hersheys is awful.

I’ve read the speculation in this thread related to Hershey’s problems ... and I would agree that much has to do with union labor. (an oxymoron in itself)
But I think there is another issue at play that is even stronger. I think the bottom line has more to do with sugar costs. Our government’s continual protection of our ag business keeping sugar costs ungodly high compared to outside the U.S. has got to be a killer for Hershey.
The Dept of Agriculture is by far the largest “welfare” project this country has ever seen. And ... it is stronger than the “third rail” socsh sekuritee. I.e ...it is untouchable.
Milk chocolate relies on 2 main ingredients ...not chocolate ... milk and sugar.

Everyone says Hersey’s is not great chocolate. I’d take that over more fancy stuff.

So now they off shore the production of their product and the product cannot be differentiated from any other low priced junk. Good marketing move.
This reminds me of buying a PC. You can’t call for support because you get some guy named Mike in India who can’t speak very good English and doesn’t know computers very well. I’m speaking of my new Dell of course! Dell still wants people to think that they build a better PC of course.
