Be wary of food items from China
The St. Petersburg Times ^ | April 24, 2007 | PETER KOVACS

Lost amid the anxiety surrounding the tainted U.S. pet food supply is this sobering reality: It's not just pet owners who should be worried. The uncontrolled distribution of low-quality imported food ingredients, mainly from China, poses a grave threat to public health worldwide.

Essential ingredients, such as vitamins used in many packaged foods, arrive at U.S. ports from China and, as recent news reports have underscored, are shipped without inspection to food and beverage distributors and manufacturers. Although they are used in relatively small quantities, these ingredients carry enormous risks for American consumers. One pound of tainted wheat gluten could, if undetected, contaminate as much as a thousand pounds of food.

It’s funny they want to force farmers to tag and register everything But..

Animal ID Makers in Hog Heaven (long but good)

All livestock to be registered with state [WI-Yes, fish too] ^

I think you are seeing the reasons why they want foreign governments and corps. to run OUR ports, Super highway up from Mexico foreign trucks & drivers.

Americans would stop delivering & unloading ships. To protest this.

This is not only Clinton’s fault but also the Bush’s fault.
I’m exasperated up with the lot.

The Whole Foods near me has started to label local products.

Our local supermarket labels country of origin on almost all produce signs, and I notice they've even begun labeling the chain brand frozen veggies with COO, while the national brands don't give you a clue.

I respectfully request that Congress REQUIRE ALL HUMAN AND PET FOOD MANUFACTURERS to LIST ALL OF THE COUNTRIES that contributed ingredients to any product (including vitamins, minerals, and nutritional supplements) sold in the United States ON THE PRODUCT”S LABEL.”

I wouldn't hold my breath for that to happen -- some foods would have a list so long that they'd have to attach a folder to the product. And it's not just the country of origin that's of concern; many US companies have moved processing plants to China due to the cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. Example: some salmon from the US is canned in China and sold in Europe, while some salmon from Russia is canned in China and sold in the US. Just labeling the country of origin wouldn't tell us where the salmon has spent most of its afterlife before hitting the supermarket shelf.

I’m in the high desert and share your crummy soil and voracious wabbits. We do live 4500 ft up, so the heat isn’t too bad. We have a small plot, and are going to grow a variety of peppers, tomatillos, tomatoes, and some snap peas and herbs...God willing :)

Lots of rabbit wire helps == you can make a mixture of peper juice up and spray around your garden to keep the critters away — not sure it will work for birds.

Pepper juice? What kind of pepper? Black, jalapeno??? We encased our plot with rabbit wire, but it’s kind of expensive. Well for us anyway. We’re trying to save money by growing the veggies that are overpriced(isn’t everything these days?), and of course, I noticed a package of the dreaded zuchinni. I kind of envisioned sweet peas, bramble berries and grapes growing along all the chain link, with salvia, Tx bluebells, stock, and bells of Ireland growing around all the Juniper trees. We’re just under the pine line, and live in a juniper forest :)

Let me know about the pepper spray mix. I hope I’m up to doing this, because I have always loved gardening.

Mix cayenne pepper in warm water — be careful to keep off your skin, a little bit of pepper goes a long way.

Back in the 80's I was having trouble going to sleep so I got on the L-Trytophane bandwagon.

My original supply was from my doctor. The pills had no taste and worked marvelously.

When I ran out, I went to Trader Joe's to get a cheaper version. They tasted foul, gave me headaches, and so I quit using them. Soon after I read about how lots of people were getting severely sick and dying from L-Trytophane.

In my mind L-Tryptophane was not the problem, it was all the other garbage put in the pill by particular manufacturers, who may have been from China for all I know.

Another thing to consider:

There seems to be an increase in the occurence of Autism.
This increase is greater among the smarter/wealthier population.
These people shop at places like Trader Joe's more than the average person.
Is Autism a result of bad ingredients from China?

A friend who uses Chinsese herbs emailed me today that Mayway, the company she orders from, stated that many Chinese herb formulas are contaminated with drugs and heavy metals. Mayway now uses certified organic suppliers and tests all the herbs they sell, my friend told me.

“just what the HELL does our FDA do anymore?”

They're only responsible for testing 80% of the food supply. The individual processors are responsible for testing the other 20%.

The FDA wants more of their responsibility given to processors and distributors due to a lack of funding and manpower.

“The Whole Foods near me has started to label local products.”

I don’t know about Cali but, Texas made it a law for local health depts. to mandate labeling on all (including in-house product) previously unlabeled product. (to avoid allergic reactions and such) This adds to the cost of the product and focuses liability.

I’ve never heard of Mayway. Is it an online store? I’ve had to quit buying online. The last few times, I used my debit card, and my bank account was drained. No trace as to how/why. Thinking of getting a secured credit card for online purchases to limit liability.

Btw, good to “see” you again :)

“Mix cayenne pepper in warm water”

Add some dishwashing soap to that mixture. Helps it stick and stay longer.

Also makes a great wasp killer, just spray right on the nest.

That is a big concern. Dishes or stoneware. The glaze probably has lead, and sadly they are not marked as such. I think this is why we are seeing a resurgence of lead poisoning in children.
