From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms. And, argues Naomi Wolf, George Bush and his administration seem to be taking them all

Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down: the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel, and took certain activists into custody.

1 Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
Yup, no terrorist and Islamist threat. It's all made up.
Spanish citizens know that they face a grave security threat; what we as American citizens believe is that we are potentially threatened with the end of civilisation as we know it. Of course, this makes us more willing to accept restrictions on our freedoms.
That's because we ARE, and mimicing Spanish appeasement isn't the American way. We've seen how that's worked out for the Spanish and other appeasers throughout history, and we (or at least most of us) want none of it!
What if, in a year and a half, there is another attack - say, God forbid, a dirty bomb?
Huh? I thought the whole threat from the Islamists was just a ploy, namely "Invok[ing] a terrifying internal and external enemy," so GW Bush, who is really Hitler's clone, could take over. Which is it?
Bah, the rest is just as inane -- not worth the time to shred.
Can you say global warming?
Or even easier, can you say "arguing for 7 years that a President who will soon step down is just like Hitler"?
What a bunch of BS. Just when you think that the left can’t get any loonier, you read something like this.
Its fascinating to me that the extra authorizations for the national guard noted by Naomi are the result of the hyping of Katrina disaster against President Bush. Ironically, Leftist Bush bashing leads to the very increase in presidential power the Left pretends to be scared of.
Janet Reno sent jackbooted thugs armed with full-auto sturmgewehren to save the Waco children by shooting their parents (see the FLIR project) and burning all survivors by "gasing" them with a flammable mixture of CS gas and its dispersing agent, high winds and open flame stoves/lanterns.
Thugs in America? Groups of angry young Republican men, dressed in identical shirts and trousers, menaced poll workers counting the votes in Florida in 2000..
Naomi, stop. Yer killin me. White Dress Shirts and Dockers are now the uniform of neo-Nazi's???
[Wow lady you are delusional. I'd say your stash is laced with something, likely opium.]
Thjey know very well that Fascists are leftists, but tehy don’t want you and me to know it.
They know very well that Fascists are leftists, but they don’t want you and me to know it.
Not yet, anyway. Just wait and see what happens if a Republican is elected president in 2008, especially if they also take back Congress.
I missed Florida, but I was in Atlanta at the CNN protest. Some of us did the Levis and others the Suits, a rather friendly mob of fascists.
Jesus, this is laughable. George Bush, the uniter not divider, has turned out to be the Liberal’s best friend in many ways. Lefties like Ms. Wolf have never faced REAL abridgements of their freedoms, and all this nonsense they spout is in the service of someday ensuring that THEY will be the ones in charge to abridge those freedoms, that their own team will be ensconced in power, and that’s what all this rhetorical jockeying-around really amounts to-—conjuring up a fictitious scenario to try to get people to exchange one imaginary “dictator”(GW Bush) for a real one (Al Gore in soothing “earth-tones”?)—assuming this is the same Naomi Wolf who made big bucks from Gore when she was wearing the hat of Poltical Pundit/Image Consultant/Big-haired Brunette feminist years ago.-—
I really wish I hadn’t missed that.
You meet the nicest people at FReeps, is my experience.
This article is beyond deranged. And this is the kind of crap that gets published about the USA, across the pond. No wonder people there have misguided ideas about us.
The National Socialist Workers Party of Germany, otherwise known as the Nazi Party, was indeed - socialist, and it had a lot in common with the modern left in America. Hitler preached class warfare, agitating the working class to resist “exploitation” by capitalists — particularly Jewish capitalists, of course. Their program called for the nationalization of education, health care, transportation, and other major industries. They instituted and vigorously enforced a strict gun control regimen. They encouraged pornography, illegitimacy, and abortion, and they denounced Christians as right-wing fanatics. Yet a popular myth persists that the Nazis themselves were right-wing extremists. This insidious lie biases the entire political landscape, and the time has come to expose it.
