U.S. government workers selling government-provided transit fare cards on eBay

WASHINGTON: Federal employees are going online to sell mass transit fare cards the government buys for them, congressional auditors say.

Employees also are exaggerating their commuting costs, and some continue to receive transportation subsidies after leaving the government.

Abuses in the mass transit benefits program for government workers are wasting tens of millions of dollars (euros) each year, says Congress' Government Accountability Office.

Using seven agencies' mass transit records, investigators found at least $17 million (€12.5 million) in fraudulent transit benefits claimed in the Washington metropolitan area during 2006. That amount "could be millions more" if fraud exists in the dozens of agencies the GAO did not review, auditors say in testimony prepared for a Senate hearing Tuesday.

Sounds like the kind of "benefits" they would see as their "rights" up here.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was "pioneered" by Masshole staffers in Kerry, Kennedy, Barney Frank & Marty Meehan's DC offices and spread like a virus from there.

Cut them some slack. If they are phantom employees who don’t show up for work, it’s not like they’d need the transit cards themselves.

Sheeesh. I’ve been complaining about “public servant” benefits for years. But even I didn’t know they got TAX FREE, fully paid transportation to/from work!

There ya go, folks. Our rulers...our new privileged class.

Cool it friends. This is just a carbon offset. If they sell it to another worker who actually rides mass transit then they have accomplished the purpose of reducing car traffic...

Well, we need programs like this to attract quality employees . . .

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that no one will be prosecuted. No one will be fired. No one will be made to repay the money he stole. A couple of employees will be reprimanded. Convicted criminals in prison will tell liberal newscasters that they quiver in their socks at the threat of a reprimand, particularly a Severe Reprimand, which goes on their Permanent Record.

Of course, Nancy Pelosi will claim that this is George Bush's fault, since he doesn't pay government employees a living wage.

The federal bureaucracy, with the exception of those involved in national security, is nothing more than a nest of Marxist thieves, liars and thugs. They are the enemy of the American people and their freedom and will need to be dealt with.

Civil Servants...

When was the last time you went into a governmental office and felt like you were dealing with your servant?

You’re right of course....but then, most “civil servants” I’ve come into contact with couldn’t make the grade to become my servant...or employee..

Including those who were “Federalized to Professionalize” — our Airport “Security Screeners”...
