In February's poll, the former New York City mayor had 39 percent of the support of Republican voters but that dropped to 35 percent in the April 17-18 survey.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, who opposes abortion but supports embryonic stem cell research, has dropped as well. He's slid from 19 percent in February to 16 percent in April.
The leading candidates have dropped because Republican voters are shifting to more conservative presidential candidates or others whose names have been bandied about as possible GOP nominees.
Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who recently changed his position on abortion, moved up from 6 percent in February to 10 percent in the April Fox News poll.
Meanwhile Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson, who have not announced a bid, jumped from 7 percent to 9 percent and from not being in the poll to 8 percent, respectively.
Looking at other candidates, ex-Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson moved up from 2 to 4 percent, pro-life Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback stayed the same at two percent as did pro-life Rep. Duncan Hunter. Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas Gov. had one percent but no other candidates reached one percent in the poll.
Some 11 percent of Republicans were unsure.
Last week, Giuliani came under fire for telling pro-life advocates to get over the abortion issue.
"Our party has to get beyond issues like that," he told the Des Moines Register newspaper.
He also appeared to indicate that the Republican Party won't gain supporters if it retains its pro-life position.
"Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we're for, not if we're a party that's known for what we're against," he said.
Those comments followed the flap on abortion funding.
We will have to agree to disagree. It is not a lack of backbone, but of moral agreement on this and other issues near and dear to conservatives. The problem is that there are no leaders with true conservative values that are electable. That is what gives Rudy traction. It is more symptomatic of our deficiencies, than of his lack of the qualities we say we want. It is the same way in California where I live. This is exactly how Ahhhnuld became gubernator and then demonstrated he was a RINO.
Yes, it is a mistake to make Rudy the next GOP presidential candidate, but are conservatives prepared to lose the presidency to gain control of their party? It is a valid question.
“Not even in the general election when a no vote will be a vote for Hillary or whoever the Democratic nominee is?”
For pete’s sake, will people stop with that line?
Not voting for rudy is NOT a vote for hillary (if they even are the nominees).
Vote for rudy: Rudy 1, hillary 0
Vote for hillary: Rudy 0, hillary 1
Vote for neither: Rudy 0, Hillary 0
NONE of those options are equal to each other! I wish people would stop reciting these little mantras that have no basis in fact or logic.
This has gotten beyond ridiculous. Let’s see Rudy, until you and a few others came along conservatives were known to be
FOR protecting the life of the unborn.
FOR the right to keep and bear arms, not just for hunting.
FOR keeping our sovereignty and having immigrants come throught the proper channels.
FOR smaller goverment, which would not include going to court to secure entitlements to illegals.
FOR the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
I don’t know, it seems to me conservatives are FOR alot.
Since Rudy has shown to flip flop on the issue of abortion, it tells me that he doesn’t know his own mind and is swayed by public opinion. A man of this sort of character has no backbone.
What would we win with Rudy as president?
On Immigration Reform
Entitlement Reform
Government Spending
Social Issues
etc.
Rudy is selling off...lol
Fred Thompson is 2nd highest in value there now and he isn’t even in yet.
Rudy-cide.....that has a nice ring to it
;-)
No, I stand by my original statement. Finding acceptable the killing of an innocent human life, is not just immoral; there is something deeply lacking in their character. There is a shallowness present in their souls.
You need to fill out your profile page to give us an idea of your age, unless your a woman of course. ;-D
Answer: ABSOLUTELY, WE ARE..it's called "scorched earth policy," baby! Rudy is an invader. Its one election vs. loosing the whole party over to the dark side.
Fortunately, I don't think it will have to get to that extreme though. Rudy's falling. And we have better candidates, and when they HONESTLY promote the conservative message, we will win. We always win when that's done.
"Remember when it was about the music?"
On Immigration Reform
Entitlement Reform
Government Spending
Social Issues
etc.
I agree with you on all of that. Can you name me one GOP candidate who has your values that can win? If the GOP cannot field a competative ticket, are you prepared to go down to see a democratic candidate elected as a result?
I am only 65 years old, but as my grandfather used to say “It’s not the miles you’ve gone, but the roads you driven.” Amen.
Well, Rudy should just “get over” these polling slides!
If he opens his mouth a few more times, he could turn them into free falls.
I don’t have the intelligence to cipher it through so I am simply going to say that we will have to agree to disagree. Sorry for another ‘line’ but it’s the only one I can think of to explain our differences. For every person who fails to vote rather than vote for a RINO it means the opposition needs one less vote to win. Think of it as a balance scale that starts out balanced. Each vote is an ounce or a pound or some other weight. To keep the scale in balance you have to have the same number of units on each side of the scale. This is exactly how an election works, every vote is like one of those units and every unit that is not placed on one side of the scale is, in effect, placed on the other side of the scale.
Actually I resent your attitude that I am coming to you with little mantras. I simply asked you if you would vote for him in the general election. The answer is no and there’s really no reason to embellish it by questioning my intelligence or reasoning power.
Many thanks!
Still in the lead however.
Right now he is doing well on name recognition and his 9/11 performance. As the polls get closer and more Republicans begin to pay close attention to the histories and positions of candidates I expect his support to continue to fall. His stances on gays, guns, and abortion are out of step with the overwhelming majority of folks in our party and his personal life makes Bill Clinton’s look normal.
If he'd politely step aside, they will.
That last sentence is certainly oddly constructed but I think I know what you mean, i.e., that real Republicans would destroy the party to keep him from getting the nomination.
So, in other words, Republicans should take on board a "Republican In Name Only" because, in your mind, he can win the presidency. Even granted that he could win, what would we conservatives have? Another Rockefeller Republican who doesn't believe in what we believe? Sir, that is so fundamentally stupid that it's hard for me to think you posted it.
Go back and rethink this thing. OK?
