Judging by the cranky feedback, supporters of Rudy Giuliani's bid for the Republican presidential nomination did not like my column last week. To sum up, I argued that Giuliani was pro-abortion and therefore did not deserve support from conservatives.
Rudy backers offered three comebacks. Some simply chose to ignore his shameful pro-abortion record. Others proclaimed that abortion was just one issue and Rudy is a conservative on most others, especially fiscal issues. Finally, another group decided that his policy positions really don't matter because Rudy is the only guy who can beat Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Since we dealt with Giuliani's sordid abortion background last week, let's move on to the other two responses. Is Rudy a conservative on most other issues? Based on his record, he is, at best, a mixed bag.
He does deserve a conservative thumbs-up in a few areas. Obviously, crime in New York City declined by big numbers while he was mayor from 1994 to 2001, due, in part, to policing changes during his administration. Mayor Giuliani also frequently spoke about school choice. While not investing any real political capital, his stance took courage as mayor of the big-union Big Apple.
For good measure, Giuliani put together a deal to privatize the city's bloated, patronage-ridden Off-Track Betting Corp., but his successor dropped the ball....."

“He only became a Republican after he began to get all these jobs from them. He’s definitely not a conservative Republican. He thinks he is, but he isn’t.”
— Rudy’s mother Helen
If Rudy’s momma gets it, why can’t you? Rudy is a liberal. Your’re OK with voting for a liberal?
Yes, of course, I was exaggerating to make a point.
I’m tired of the anti-Rudy brigades taking over every thread as if only they are real Republicans.
I hope Thompson gets in, but in the meantime Rudy’s my man. I pick my candidate, you pick yours...and in the end, I will happily support the GOP candidate.
Mmmmmmmm......just how short are they? LOL.
Well there are at least three women who know his shortcomings quite well, maybe Trump and those buddies Rotty .. oops Rooty shacked up with after dumping Donna
LOL .
Do you think Snowe and Specter deserve a pass from conservatives ? They may sit on the R side of the aisle but in almost every other way they are indistinguishable from the Dims.
Think about Snowe, who just last week called for retreat from Iraq by next year, for example. How is she any different than a Rangel or a Reid ?
Can’t stand a debate ?
Hunter’s challenge is to get past the primaries and win the nomination. If he were our nominee, he would win the general election. His stance on the issues will resonate with the American voters, he has a good resume and he is very likeable. He stands head and shoulders above anyone in the Democrat (cess)pool of candidates.
And he would get upsdriver’s vote! Something that Rudy would never get!!:)
I've said before, in other posts, I cannot and will not vote for McCain or Giuliani...even if one of them makes it to the general election. One is too liberal, the other too crazy!
Reminds me of that famous quote from a newsperson back when Reagan won in a landslide, something about no one he knew voted for Reagan, how could he have won?
I get around to talk with all sorts of folks. Rudy has heavy support from all quarters, even Social C's like ya'll.
I understand the mob mentality *here* is against him, certainly. Seen it before, the 'peasants with pitchforks' campaign has been tried. "We're the only true conservatives and anyone who doesn't think like me is a blankety-blank-blank liberal! X will never win the nomination, will never be Prez, cuz all folks who think like me will never vote for him!"
Last time it was Buchannanites saying that about Bush.
Then, after the election, after they were proven wrong, they vanished.
Will history repeat itself?
“If anything, the base of the GOP is right now to the right of Bush, probably swing voters are as well. Their 2008 candidate should reflect that sentiment.”
I know everyone in my office are political neutrals when it comes to party affiliation. Everyone of them who has looked at Rudy has said they would vote for the Democrat party since they see little to no difference between the 2.
We, in Mexifornia made the mistake of voting for a "Rudy" kind of candidate. Ahnuld is a major RINO and we were better off with the idiot we had before. Ask any conservative on this site what they think about the kind of bait and switch the RINO's are now pulling to get elected.
It is insulting, for one. Secondly, they end up being worse than having actually supporting a true conservative because the RINO's get control of the party leadership for decades. Rudy is the same sort of problem for conservatives if elected. In the end, he may be elected anyway, but just as in the case of Ahnuld, conservatives will regret their vote.
“Now if we want to talk wussies, I cannot remember any other candidate in a dress and pantyhose. Even Hillary wears trousers.”
LMAO!
The difference is, the Buchanan Brigades were never anything more than a very noisy, obnoxious minority. Those opposed to Guiliani come from several different camps, but together they make up the overwhelming majority of Free Republic posters.
I 100% agree. I will never vote for Giuliani in the primaries.
As for Arnold, I am deeply saddened that I ever cast a vote for him in the recall election.
Arnold has caused more damage than a Democrat would have. A Democrat as Governor would have mobilized what little opposition Republicans could muster. Having a Republican go along with the loony left, means that there is no opposition whatsoever to the insanity here in CA.
Let that be a cautionary tale to those who think a RINO of that ilk wouldn’t be so bad.
I am still torn a bit about what to do in the General Election if Rudy cruises through though. I would do almost anything to stop a Clinton from being in the WH again. They are essentially thugs of the lowest form.
> To be honest, Id rather put my efforts behind Senator McCain, if it came down to it (I hope it doesnt, but Im preparing for the worse).
Sigh, I know what you mean. But I can’t stand either Rudy or McInsane! I’m praying that Fred enters or Hunter gets some traction.
If Giuliani get's elected and IF contrary to what I believe, he turns out to be a good, conservative, president, then I'll be glad to admit that I was wrong. Until then, I can only go with what Giuliani's track record shows. Based upon that, I can only conclude that he is not a good conservative, nor will he become one if elected.
I was SHOCKED when my normally fairly politically aware father pulled the “You aren’t going to vote for Giuliani? You’ll end up with Hillary.” After I gave him a rundown of Giuliani’s record, he was pretty sheepish.
We HAVE to get his record publicly disseminated. The MSM won’t do it....unless he actually manages to get the nomination. Then it will be Giuliani in drag, publicly funded abortions, and his gun grabbing record 24/7.
