The truth has never been so clear.
This would be funny if it was not so true.
This wouldn’t be happening if we had won the war by now. It’s gone on longer than our land-based involvement in WWII’s European theatre.
In part this is because unlike now we didn’t have a media complicit in American defeat in WWII. There’s no question that the media have a significant effect on the rules of engagement.
In the European theatre, we had the ability to fire bomb cities and civilian casualties weren’t counted. When Germany surrendered, there weren’t too many buildings still standing in any of their cities. If we used those rules of engagement, Iraq would be nothing more than a sandy field of ruins and the war would have ended six months or earlier after we went in.
Ah... and how would one go about making an ideiology surrender? WWII ended in Europe with the surrender of a nation- Germany.
WWII ended with another nation finally surrendering. Japan.
Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, Kazikistan, (all the ‘stans for that matter), Indonesia, India, much of Europe, parts of Russia, South America, and even the good ol’ USA have the enemy within their borders. But none of them have a “home” aside from their fanatical faith.
And aside from that, this war began long before 2001. “...to the shores of Tripoli...”
This is the single longest war we have ever been in. It has been with us since the dawn of the West. the Global War on Terror is an accurate name, but any dates on it should be labeled “Global Capaign on Terror.” That’s all this is right now. A campaign in the middle of a generations old war.
Maybe this cartoon should have all the Democrats with little White Flags in their hands.
Exactly, why would we surrender Iraq to the Enemies, Our Troops have fought to hard to take it from them.
On the contrary. The media was ambivalent about the Iraq invasion, and somewhat supportive of our involvement in Afghanistan. Embedded reporters were popular and had glowing reports to deliver while we were engaged with Saddam's "forces."
It wasn't until after the President failed to explain the situation with WMD adequately, and then engaged in the present policy of confining our engagement to Iraq and Afghanistan while the Saudis, Pakistanis, Iranians, and other Islamic countries support our enemies around the world -- that the press really got its anti-American legs.
If President Roosevelt had waited much longer to open a land front in Europe, or if we had failed to utilize stragegic bombing during WWII, the press might have taken a different tact. Americans like winners, and the situation in Iraq is less than "victorious." The casualty rates are tremendous, and it's basically for an ill-defined objective that few Americans can still understand.
This is why the Democrats and the press corps are finding so many ways to undermine the President.
FWIW, I don’t think America will ever win another war until we lose our squeamishness about killing people.
Ending it once and for all is long overdue.
That’s ridiculous - of course we can make an ideology surrender. We made fascism surrender in WWII, we can make “Islamism” surrender now. The policy now should be, as Bush had previously articulated, to destroy any state that sponsors terrorism. It’s a pretty well-defined list that does not include most of the countries you mentioned.
Not while we’re calling it “a religion of peace.”
Do you not think Naziism was an ideology? You make muslims surrender the same way you make anyone else surrender: You make them want to live more than they want to be muslims. You do this by killing them in large numbers and making those you don’t kill so miserable and afraid of being killed that they give up. You don’t necessarily win wars by killing lots of the other guys soldiers, you win wars by making the civilian population stop supporting the war.
Islam is a virulent ideology and I agree we have been in a centuries long struggle with it. However, the culture is full of bragidoccio, but they are at heart, cowards. They understand force and force alone. The only way to defeat it is with consistent force. I only wish we would employ that.

I wouldn’t call it a failure.
But then, I’m not sure you’ve seen a smiling Iraqi face-to-face yet.
Nathaniel Philbrick, Mayflower: a story of courage, community, and war, 2006:Viking p. 136
Of course they’re smiling. But meanwhile, the fight goes on. Americans aren’t sure that IED cleanup duty is how they want the lives of their sons and daughters to be spent.
Nazism was an ideology. But, it was one confined to a “home” and also greatly a political means. It never could have survived as threat outside of its “home”... destroy the nest, the bees go away.
What we face today is a true ideology. One where it is internalized. It’s personal. And has been for centuries.
There is no grand dictator sitting over most of these people, telling them to join or form terror cells. They do this out of willingness, a personal drive. A drive given to them by their parents, and theirs, and so on and so forth.
This is an idieology based in families, in homes, on the streets, and formed in individual minds daily. This isnt forced upon them. This is embraced by them.
German Nazism doesnt even compare in the slightest to this. Nazis were political. This is personal.
This is going on a long time because we ignored the gathering storm too long. Iraq became a roach motel that attracted Alqueda and jihadis from everywhere they were embedded. That’s unfortunate for the Iraqis, but good for us.
