Israel based carrier Israir Airlines signed a firm order for three Airbus A320 aircraft on 17th April, 2007, making the airline the first Airbus customer in the country. The deal marks Airbus' breakthrough in the Israeli market.

The aircraft will be configured in all economy class with 174 seats. Israir Airlines will place the aircraft on routes from Israel to all its European destinations. The engines have yet to be chosen.

"We pride ourselves in offering our passengers a personal and more enjoyable flying experience. Israir Airlines is doing its best to offer the highest possible level of quality and the newest planes, and the Airbus A320 fits in well with our philosophy", said Zohar Endelman, Israir President & CEO.

"I am personally delighted that Israir Airlines have become an Airbus customer. In the A320 aircraft, they have chosen the most technically sophisticated and operationally cost effective single aisle aircraft available. We look forward to establishing a long and lasting relationship with Israir Airlines", said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Israir Airlines was established in 1996 and started off with domestic routes within Israel from Eilat, Tel Aviv and Haifa. The airline has grown quickly and now accounts for almost 40 per cent of domestic air travel. Israir Airlines is also the second largest operator of international flights in Israel.

The A320 along with the A318, the A319, and the largest A321 is a member of the successful A320 Family. Each member features fly-by-wire controls and unique cockpit commonality across the range, allowing flight crews to fly each aircraft with minimal additional training.

Designed with advanced fuel-saving aerodynamics, with proven reliability and extended servicing intervals, the A320 Family has amongst the lowest operating costs of any aircraft.

The cabin is the widest of any single aisle aircraft, which allows for added passenger room and comfort as well as operational advantages such as quicker boarding and disembarkation.

The Airbus A320 Family is the world's best selling single family of aircraft with over 5000 orders and 3000 deliveries from more than 180 customers and operators.

Airbus is an EADS company.

Israir does NOT equal the government of Israel. Your change of the title doesn’t reflect the situation at hand.

The strength of the Euro has caused a great deal of trouble for the French economy, especially to a leading French export company like airliner manufacturer Airbus.

While the French have been very succeful in selling products of their industry to other European countries (for instance cars like Renault, Peugeot and Citroen), it seems they often face severe problems when trying to conquer non-European markets (with the exception of perfumes and fashion clothes).

I know the French recently developed a SUV, the Citroen C-Crosser. Maybe they’ll be able to export that successfully even outside of Europe. In any case, the French market for SUVs seems to be very small.

The Citroen C-Crosser (looks like a rather nice car I’d say, but being Swedish I prefer the Volvo XC90):

“Israir does NOT equal the government of Israel. Your change of the title doesn’t reflect the situation at hand.”

- I admit I ought to have written ‘Israelians’ instead of ‘Israel’. On the other hand, ‘Israel’ doesn’t necessarily equal the Israelian government.

Even a European like me has to admit Boeing is an admirable company.

The depreciation of the dollar might be bad news for American consumers and importers to some extent, but it benefits American export industry. The future of Boeing looks bright - put ‘em shades on!

- Of course. Thanks for correcting me.

Airbus is throwing in a fantastic set of Ginsu knives these days with every plane purchase.

When you see the 787 stats and the roll out you’ll know why.

That’s disappointing.

France would never defend Israel.

“That’s disappointing.

- To tell the truth, France took part in liberating Kuwait. I think they have even closer ties to Israel than to Kuwait.
On the other hand, I don’t think any Muslim nation would dare to attack Israel at the moment.

A correct headline would have been: Privately owned Israeli airline buys aircraft from European consortium (France/Germany/Spain/UK). But that sounds a lot less interesting *LOL.

Well, it's a question of definition, the 737 came in three iterations: Original, Classic and NG. A 732 has very little in common with a 738 (different avionics, engines, wings, different everything), whereas the Airbus 320 is basically the same design with minor upgrades (well, it's a much younger design after all).

However, as the basic shape of the 737 remained the same, I would agree with you. It's not like the ten (totally different) generations of Toyota Corollas vs. the VW beetle, when it comes to the bestselling car worldwide.

Some US airlines also use A320’s for domestic flights. I’m flying one week after next.

Israir is a young airline. It cannot wait for years and years to clear Boeing’s backlog of orders.
So, it probably had no choice to go with the inferior but more available product. I can’t say that I blame them.
Besides, if Airbus would completely bust (pardon the pun) we as consumers will suffer.
