Thomas assails Iraq war and Bush during ISU visit

Long-time Washington reporter Helen Thomas attacked a continued U.S. presence in Iraq and many actions of the Bush administration Thursday during the keynote address of the Iowa State University's fifth-annual First Amendment Day.

"We have a president who was determined to go to war against Iraq who, to this day, cannot explain why he took us there," Thomas said.

Thomas said an immediate pullout of all U.S. troops from Iraq would lead to trouble but the continued escalation of troops is only hurting matters.

Ok, I can explain why we went to war: We were already at war. We signed a cease fire agreement which Hussein broke numerous times. Here is my view on WMDs: Hussein had ambitions for WMDs including nukes. We found some items like nuclear parts under rose bushes and enriched uranium. We know he had ambitions and we know that he would use them. He used them on his own people. If you think he (directly or indirectly) would not use them on the people he was legally at war with, then I think you need to stand down.

It was after 911 and a lot of folks who voted to go to war did not feel like taking any chances. I still don't. I think we should nuke Iran before they nuke us. Put that in your pipe liberal lurkers.
