President Clinton, in an exclusive interview yesterday with the Daily News, declared Mayor Giuliani crucial to his battle to keep the GOP Congress from killing the assault weapons ban.
Speaking on his trip to New York, Clinton called the Republican mayor's support for the ban "quite powerful."
"I will certainly ask him and the other mayors particularly the mayors who have had previous law enforcement experience to speak up again," the President said.
Citing a "strong constituency" for the ban among urban and suburban Republicans, Clinton said, "I hope they will permit their voices to be heard and not let the Republican Party be completely dominated by the [National Rifle Association] position."
In the wake of the Oklahoma bombing, Capitol Hill Republicans agreed to delay bringing up the repeal of the ban on 19 types of semi-automatic assault weapons possibly until next year. Even if it passes Congress, Clinton has vowed to veto it.
The President also said:
The biggest threat to the nation "is the threat of abuse of freedoms by terrorists and by people who wreak violence on their fellow citizens."
His anti-terrorism legislation is key to getting "ahead of this terrorism threat" that imperils every advanced country in the world.
Driving down crime rates "would go a long way, I think, in getting people a sense of self-confidence back to face the economic challenges in this country."
New Yorkers "feel that I'm on their side in trying to help them build a better future" and will support him in the 1996 presidential race.
"I'm not pessimistic about it; I'm hopeful," the President said. "New York has been very good to me."
Clinton won New York by 15 percentage points in 1992. But a recent poll showed him losing to Colin Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and beating Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) by only 46% to 39%.
Besides predicting a 1996 victory in New York, however, Clinton declined to discuss presidential politics especially whether he would seek a cross-party endorsement from Giuliani, who last year supported former Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo.
"I don't want to get into the partisan politics," Clinton said. "That's something for [Giuliani] to deal with."
But the President was full of praise for the mayor crediting him for tracking down on ineligible single, childless adults who have been receiving home relief payments.
"I think any time you can reduce the number of people on any public program who aren't qualified to be on it, it's a good thing," Clinton said. "It builds a sense of integrity and taxpayers don't feel like they are being ripped off."
And the President praised Giuliani for his efforts to reduce crime saying, "He stood up on the crime bill, he stood up for more police officers, he stood up for community policing, he stood up [on the] assault weapons ban." Clinton came to New York to attend the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and the World Jewish Congress dinner. The mayor met him at the airport and accompanied him into the city.
Giuliani spokeswoman Cristyne Lategano said the two discussed, among many other subjects, the assault weapons ban and how the President was counting on the mayor's support. But she said Giuliani so far has not involved himself in presidential politics. Nearly all of the state's other Republicans have joined Sen. Alfonse D'Amato in endorsing Dole.
On Saturday night, Clinton sounded a somber note among the political jesting led by NBC's late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien at the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner.
Praising the news media for its coverage of the Oklahoma City tragedy, the President said: "The people who did this, they do not deserve to be celebrities. . . . But the children and the heroes do not deserve to be forgotten."

I won’t say anything about Giuliani’s position on guns, but just point out that probably the ONLY reason Clintbilly said this was to get Giuliani in trouble with his base.
Do we really think that the clintons have any other motivation at this point than to get themselves back into the White House?
The 2000 election demonstrated that gun grabbing is NOT a popular issue at the polls, and most Democrats are very cautious about pushing it these days, unless they come from insanely liberal districts.
“WE” are not. Some on this board are closet liberals and rooooooty is their guy. Who would have thought Conservatives would have an ally in slick willy to make one of the main point to NOT vote for roooty.

Ugh, don’t bring that line of thought up. If he was only doing it for his base, then why was he a constant supporter of national gun control?
