They mustered 232 years ago yesterday in what is now downtown Peabody, rushed south to battle the British soldiers retreating from Concord, and were killed in the most ferocious fighting of that first Patriots Day. Their bodies retrieved by comrades, the four Minutemen were laid to rest at the Old South Burying Ground in long-forgotten locations that now might be covered by a Peabody sidewalk or the asphalt of Washington Street. That anonymity is about to end. Thanks to city and federal officials, the ultimate sacrifices of Samuel Cook Jr., Benjamin Deland Jr., Ebenezer Goldthwaite, and George Southwick Jr. are being commemorated by headstones placed in the cemetery that holds these original patriots.

It’s hard to believe that a state that produced some of America’s greatest patriots is now reduced to a socialist hell that goes against everything they fought so hard for.
They better hope those brave men aren’t buried under the street there, they’d be rolling over in their graves with such force as to tear that street apart if they knew what had happened to their state.
Couldn’t agree more. I hope this story inspires some residents of Massachusetts.
Those anti-government, terrorist rabble-rousers? Perish the thought.
I am a resident of Massachusetts, I’m proud of her history, but ashamed of our present day political situation.
Bump.
Harry Reid...these men were patriots....you sir are a jerk.(well i had to come up with a term that moderator would not delete).
God Bless American patriots,
Freegards Lex
When the Mass. State Quarter with the Minute Man holding his > musket < was designed there was a big push in Mass. to remove his “gun”. Complete idiots. What do they think beat the British? Sling shots?
The founder of the family surname came ashore in Massachusetts in 1630 (though he eventually ended up in Connecticut). Family members fought proudly in the Revolutionary War. Produced a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
I'm sure those of my forebears are spinning rapidly beneath their tombstones over what has happened to the Northeast states.
Naughty words... < /tard >
:-)
232 years...the Roman Empire lasted 500 years. By the way things are going, I’d say it’s a safe bet that the Roman Empire will retain its title. Our collapse is imminent within the next century.
I couldn’t agree more.
I am a resident of Massachusetts, and I think those thoughts every single day when I drive through Concord and see the Minuteman statue...when it isn’t surrounded by Antiwar protesters or in the case of Lexington last week, Global Warming Protesters.
Bah.
Maybe if we conservatives can ramp up some large state’s economy, and produce the usual conservative-state low housing prices, all the lib New Englanders will abandon their now irreverseably-fouled political nest for that one, and we conservatives can move back in and fix it.
The downside is that it might mean abandoning a major state like Texas with known conservative roots to the libs. The only upside of that downside is that even Texas is being ruined by illegal immigration, so we might not be abandoning American values in the process. Besides, the New England borders are shorter than the Texas border, so they’ll be easier to defend while we rebuild classical liberalism. Then, we can go back and re-liberate whichever state they took. Without the strong infrastructure that conservative politics brings, lib-state will become unlivable eventually, so there wouldn’t be much residual lib or multicultural population left to resist. New England is small enough that they can keep it running (sort of) even in the face of political incompetence.
My former hometown is the only town I have ever encountered where they fly the UN flag on the town common. It was downhill from the American flag on an equal-height pole, but even that may have changed by now.
The UN flag is also flown at the same height as the American one on the lawn in front of the Fine Arts Center of UMass in that same town.
P.S. Isn't that H! on the reverse of the NY $1/4?
40 years if we are lucky.
Tell me about it. I used to live in Mass and it took me 19 months to get my license for “tergert and hunting”. The Massholes spelled ‘target’ wrong - ha.
Are they aware that these Minutemen were armed with the most murderous assault rifles available at that time???
