No Stemming the Tide of Good U.S. Jobs Going Overseas
Human Events ^ | April 16, 2007 | Phyllis Schlafly

On the first day that H-1B visas became available, corporations snapped up all that are allowed. Our government received 150,000 applications for the 85,000 slots set aside to bring in foreign skilled workers.

Corporations whine that H-1Bs are needed because of a shortage of Americans with skills, but major studies at the University of California Davis and Duke University conclusively prove we have thousands of unemployed or underemployed Americans with all the needed technical skills. Nobel economist Milton Friedman accurately labeled H-1Bs a government "subsidy" to enable employers to get workers at a lower wage.

"Contrary to corporate propaganda, H-1Bs are not an alternative to outsourcing skilled jobs but a vehicle to promote outsourcing. H-1Bs enable corporations to bring in foreigners, train them in American ways, and then send them back to guide outsourced plants in Asia."

I stand by my proposal to outsource all jobs. We'll all just stay home, watch TV, and buy cheap stuff on credit. When we run out of credit, the government can just print more money.

That would be better than no job security and raises that don't keep up with inflation. Who's with me? I mean, if they can do it better and cheaper in other countries, then why should we have to do anything at all? Just let them build the junk. A lot of the free trade advocates have told me that trade deficits and debt are no big deal, so screw it. Let's all just stay home and order cheap stuff from Walmart on credit. We'll hire "guest" workers to man Walmart for us and make deliveries.

I'll bet that a lot of free trade advocates have told you that the trade deficit is no big deal, and I'll bet you made up the part about debt because you don't understand the difference.

What a load of bull...Why would corps not hire Americans if they are here and ready for the technical positions? The sad answer is: when it comes to mathematics and applied science, often corps have to look abroad.

And full employment here in the US with 100s of thousands of jobs, the majority in high paying sectors, being created each month. Relatively few are suffering permanent displacement as a result of this.

Outsourcing is not the problem. A lousy American educational system is the problem. Americans do not leave school equipped to compete in the global market for jobs.

Attempts at protectionism will only concentrate mediocrity in the USA.

The world is “flat” and job competition is now global for skilled positions. It will never go back to the old ways.

The Industrial Revolution has morphed into the Information/Service/Technology Revolution.

Improve or be left behind.

I don’t consider h1b to be as negative as outsourcing as it augments our own labor pool. Most who come over are here to stay.

I think if the changes to the education system are to be addressed, it will have to be rebuilt from the ground up. I nolonger think there is hope for the current system.

“What a load of bull...Why would corps not hire Americans if they are here and ready for the technical positions? The sad answer is: when it comes to mathematics and applied science, often corps have to look abroad.”

A sad answer is also that people believe the excuses, the politically appropriate lies.

Wages are a cost. If they can’t be depressed by outsourcing they will be depressed by insourcing persons from abroad. “The corps” are not moral, patriotic beings. They are entities to make profits. More profits the better.

Jobs are OUTFORCED do to Over-Taxation, Over-Unionization, Inane Enviro laws, and UNLIMITED CIVIL LIABILTY.

Remind me again, which political Party supports those?

Add in advances in robotic and communications technology(the Internet), as well as the explosion of the STANDARDIZED SHIPPING CONTAINER, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Um, Cheri, you’re totally wrong.

I’m pro-American.

And you? All for outsourcing? Strip mining of America’s economy? What about Milton Friedman’s quote above, is he an unAmerican civil servant retiree?

I advise any youngster who asks to get a government job. Sure, they’ll just become part of the problem, but at least its not the part that’s getting screwed.
